I am looking to buy a soundcard for a repurposed Dell Poweredge R710. It needs to be cheap (less than $20) and be pcie 8x at its biggest.
So far I've got these:
ASUS rog supreme FX II HD Soundcard
Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme SB1040
Will the ASUS card work in a non-ASUS motherboard? If it does that will be great, as ASUS cards are less expensive than SB's.

P.S. Don't tell me that the R710 is loud, because it's not that loud compared to other servers. Also, I'm going to be using Linux, so no software compatibility issues either.

I've never heard of a x8 sound card. If there's a sound card > x1, it's most likely for professional, multi-track recording.

Anyway, to answer your question, I've also never heard of a sound card that's specific to a certain motherboard. Not saying they don't exist, but any PCIe sound card should be assumed to work with any PCIe-capable motherboard.

Anyway, if you want to be sure, visit the manufacturer's web site and search for the model. If there are any major compatibility issues, look for a "system requirements" or "hardware compatibility" section.

BTW, we use Dell servers at my job...

BTW, we use Dell servers at my job. R710, R720, R730, and others. The amount of noise they all make depends on the CPU temperature, which is basically a function of load & ambient temperature. Also, how many & what kind of CPU you've in it. It helps if you can keep them free of dust. Just FYI.

When it comes to noise, only 3U and 4U are worth considering, among rack mount chassis. For 1U and 2U, the fans are so small that they have to spin really fast to move enough air.

Thanks for the info, I'll check the manufacturer's website and see.

Ok, so it only works with certain ASUS motherboards.

Do you have any other recommendations? Is buying a generic soundcard a bad idea? Or USB external sound cards? I just want the same quality sound as integrated sound would provide.

Which card is this, may I ask?

USB is certainly a valid option. In either case, I'd go for a name brand, like Creative, ASUS, Turtle Beach, or Diamond, if you can. Maybe Star Tech is okay.

I've only used Creative and M-Audio cards. Currently, I'm using my motherboard's optical output + external DAC.

It was the ASUS rog supreme FX II HD

I ended up going with a SoundBlaster Audigy FX SB1570. Thanks for your help!
