Are cheap motherboards bad?

I want to save money on my build, so I went with a cheap mobo and case to save money on my more expensive components. My specs are as follows;

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DmGqbX

i5-8400
Gigabyte H301M A Motherboard
Zotac GTX 1080 Mini
GeIL - SUPER LUCE RGB SYNC 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze PSU
Rosewill SCM-01 case

Would the mobo I picked be bad for my other components? The i5-8400 is locked as far as I'm concerned, and I don't plan to overclock. Any advice?

Imo it's fine to cheap out on the mobo if the CPU is locked. The most you'll be missing out on is less PCI x16 slots. but like nobody does more than 2 cards SLI.
Gigabyte H310M A is not bad, but it has several significant limitations:
  • only 2 ram slots;
    only 4 sata ports;
    no heatsinks on voltage regulators;
    only 2 (+2 internal) USB3 and 4 (+2 internal) USB2 ports.
B360 board would be a better choice. Asrock B360M Pro4 - for example.

The OP specified an I5-8400. That CPU requires DDR4 RAM and a 300 series motherboard. That limits the choices for the motherboard. Motherboards with DDR2 RAM would not be a viable choice.
