I was wondering if i spent the same amount (£500) on a laptop and then a desktop from the same store, would it be a better performer/faster?

Solution
A desktop would by far give you much better performance and would cost much less. Also building it yourself would be cheaper and can be easy.
No, desktops perform a lot better than laptops at the same price point.

Laptops concentrate on lower power to extend battery life. Desktops can let it rip. The compact, portable, battery power, and resilience of laptops all cost money, so if you do not need those things, you can spend the money on speed!

It would be faster still if you could put it together yourself because you would get a better deal.

A desktop will have better performance and price but lack the mobility of a laptop. For your question the desktop would perform much better and could be upgraded in the future. If you are planning on buying what purpose would you be using your computer for?
