Are DIMM and UDIMM RAM Compatible?

I have an ASUS M5A97 mobo with an AMD Phenom II x4 965 CPU. I currently have 2x4GB of this RAM (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7104116) in it, but I saw this ram (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=4864681&sku=P33-6315) for a pretty decent price. If I put the 2nd type (the UDIMM) in along side the original RAM, will they work together or should I not mess with it?

I saw that post but it didn't really seem to answer the question of whether or not I could have 2 sticks of DIMM and 2 sticks of UDIMM and it all work together. 🙁

The answer to your question is no. UDIMM and DIMM are meant for two different types of motherboards. And besides that point it is not good practice to mix RAM anyway.

Thus, UDIMMs are an excellent solution for low-cost computing, such as home/personal computing." EDIT...UDIMM does not work on mine....found out it is for servers too NON-ECC is the way to go..

and this paragraph is why i thought UDIMM would work but it did NOT !!!!

i think UDIMM might fit in a DIMM slot and have no idea which 2 types of motherboards you are talking about. it says the lower voltage (on UDIMM) at 1.35v will increase automatically to 1.5 v(DIMM) as needed...so they might even work together

i'm looking into it myself.....EDIT nope UDIMM is for servers too..didn't work

Today, the vast majority of memory used by desktops, notebooks, and mobile devices is unbuffered non-ECC (Error Checking and Correction) DRAM. In fact, unless one is running an Intel or AMD CPU that can support ECC memory , unbuffered Non-ECC DRAM is the only choice for most users. Intel Xeons, for example, support ECC memory, while even the new Core i7’s do not. AMD has much broader ECC support at the CPU level, but many AMD motherboards do not support ECC memory features so it is not universal.

so see if the cpu or mobo supports ECC memory, otherwise go non-ECC memory ..... buffered memory is for servers mostly.. and apparently UDIMM is too

i put non-ecc in the search box at amazon and sure enough UDIMM pops up first thing .....

so you can see how people can make this mistake easily as i did..... DIMM or non-ecc it should say..not UDIMM
