Are generic PSUs bad news?

I was considering purchasing a cheap, generic PSU from a site I found thru Price Watch. It's a 400W ATX (P4 and AMD compat.) w/ 4 connectors, for $23.

Is this a good deal? Or is this thing gonna let me down? I'm afraid of generic components, cuz they never seem to work right. Is this thing gonna burn out or fry my mobo?

TIA

It might be fine, but I wouldn't trust it. Issues with lower cost PSUs include noise, not delivering what they're supposed to deliver, and not delivering a constant, consistent flow of power. You said its "AMD and Intel compatible", not "approved".

Never had any problems with generic PSU's apart from the aforementioned noise.

However, state-of-the-art kit draws a lot of current; mobo's, processors and video cards can be quite fussy about getting a clean stable supply.

I would pay a few extra bucks for a quality PSU.

Just my opinion...

Hey, if you're lucky, it'll work just fine. You might want to ask the store if they have any info on the brand, even though they call it generic.
