Are Hard Drive utilities bad for mechanical drives?

I've noticed my HDD makes constant sounds if I leave a HDD Utility program (e.g. HD Sentinel, HD Tune) open.

Would this be really bad for mechanical drives? Being accessed all the time?

depend, everything break eventually.

Having the utility open shouldn't do anything. I assume it's not constantly testing it so this would be a sign of another cause.
