Are HD PCI tuners worth the extra cost?

Being a teen and making a mere $7+/hr I can't really afford an HDTV. I would however still like to watch my favorite programs in all their high definition glory. I've read up on some different high definition PCI tuners. But is it worth the extra money compared to a standard tuner? I'll probably only be watching the content on my desktop monitor, and never outputting it to a tv. I'm assuming that a standard tuner would produce poor quality video on a 17" LCD. Seeing as a computer monitor is high definition though, is it worth the cost of an HD tuner?

actually its kind of the opposite with picture qualitly. i thought my asus tuner card produced a slighly better picture for analog cable than my myhd mdp-120 does. but nowhere near the quality of the picture of an hd broadcast tho.

its hard to say what will be "worth the extra cost" to somebody. the hdtv card i settled on after my research will runs about $300...but there are cheaper cards that may fit your budget. if you havent seen it already, here is a link to avsforum's hdtv buying guide.

check out antennaweab.org to see what channels hd channels you can get in your area, and how good the signal stregnth will be.

when i had just the analog card i used snapstream, basically because it looked really slick. it did what i wanted, and i didnt have any big complaints about it. right now i dont use anything, because if i'm watching tv, i'm probably watching analog cable directly into the tv rather than the cable thru the hdtv card. most of the hdtv i watch involves a football.

avsforum has a lot of discussion on sagetv vs snapstream, and a couple of threads on myhtpc. their search engine isnt the greatest sometimes its just easier to browse thru their home theatre pc forum.
