I've recently begun building PCs and wanting to customize them more, so I decided to put led strips in my pc. I made sure to unplug and turn off my PSU and ground myself and then I plugged the molex connector into my PSU. I proceeded to mount the strip on the bottom of the case and plug everything back in. Once I pressed the power button the led strip and the computer turned on and then I heard a pop then everything turned off and I saw smoke coming out of the case. It turned out the motherboard got killed. The reason I made this post is because I want to light my new Build and I don't want to kill any other components and still make it look cool. Does anyone know any reliable led strips or tips on installing them?

Some strips are made more cheaply than others, rather than risk my system when I built it to an inexpensive and potentially poorly wired led setup I opted for a set that uses an external power supply. It's not as compact or integrated as using molex powered or other options since it requires a way to get the power wire into the case and a separate plug to a power strip.

Not saying that there's a good chance of ruining the system but I know led strips are overall cheaply mass produced and I doubt a whole lot of care is put into producing $10-20 lights vs psu, cpu, motherboard, gpu etc that cost $100's each.

Tips for installing them, plug them in and move them around the case to figure out which works best to get the kind of lighting coverage you want before you install them. You may want to use additional adhesive tape since the main complaint of most any brand of lights is the thin strip of sticky tape not holding well. I used hot glue for mine, not the most attractive but the lights should be placed up out of sight anyway to get a nice glow and not have them blinding you through a case window. Perks of the hot glue, it's cheap and peels off easily if you mess up or wish to remove them with easy case clean up.

Best of luck with it.
