I bought a microfiber cloth from auto zone that listed "micro auto cloths". It kinda looks like a carpet. Is it a bad idea to use it to clean off the thermal paste off of a processor or will it damage it with static electricity?
Thanks guys. I actually just received a glasses cloth from a glasses store for free after finding out that the cloth I bought earlier generates static... 😵. I already have Arcticlean solutions at home from Amazon. I'm sur these will work very well.
Yes that will work. And if you run out of the Arctic Clean, use 70% Isopropyl alcohol. Use the cleaner sparingly and don't get any of the liquid inside the CPU case.
If you need to take the CPU out (you don't need to do this to clean the old thermal compound) hold the CPU bt the edges and upside down so as not to get any cleaning liquid inside the CPU case.

not because of static but becuase it will leave tiny particles of that cloth all over the cpu surface.
as ubrales says a alcohol swap or the sanitising hand wipes you can buy over the counter.
I always use an old credit card edge to take the majority of old soft paste off, then a couple of rubs with one of those ,leave it 10 minutes & job done.
An alternate is lint-free (lint free is different from micro fiber) gun cleaning patches. With these you will need a bottle of 70% Isopropyl alcohol available at Walmart and similar stores for less than $2 for a quart.
