Are motherboards cappable of 4k gaming?

I was thinking about putting a 1080 in my other computer. But its not a 4k compatible mother board so does this mean if I try to play 4k games on it? I heard non 4k mother boards cant put out enough pixels to do 4k gaming is this true?

The motherboard (within reason) has no impact on the resolution you game at.
The onboard graphics only matters if you use it.
