Are mousepads essential for this mouse and for gaming?

I'm heavily considering a Razer Naga Hex. I was wondering if a mouse pad is essential for laser mice such as the Hex and gaming in general. I play a lot of league of legends, bf3 (soon to be bf4 😀), Guild Wars 2, Planetside 2 those type of games.

Also if any of you own the Naga Hex and would like to give me a general review of what it's like to play games such as those listed. Thanks

You don't need a mouse pad, but they are nice to have. Any flat surface that a mouse can track well on will work. I used to use a book with a cover on it for 2-3 years and never had a problem playing league. On the other hand I use a $2 mouse pad I got from Walmart and having a good dedicated surface is a good idea.

Are you currently using a mouse pad? If not are you having problems you think having a mouse pad would fix?

Buy your mouse and see if it works well on your desk. If not, buy a mousepad.
I use a Razer Goliathus Control (with a Deathadder) and think its pretty good, definitely a different feel to using it straight on my wooden desk.

by not using a mousepad you are prematurely wearing out the teflon feet on your mouse.

there can be tracking issues with some surfaces however in general that is not normally much of an issue compared to the first.

you absolutely do not need anything fancy like one of the razer gaming mousepads and most certainly none of the hard type mousepads.

a cheap black $3 staples mousepad is more than good enough. personally though i pefer the thicker style which they dont carry anymore but you can still find some online if you search google for thick black mousepad. i'm currently useing an 11x17 sized tekmat as a mousepad which is essentially the same material as either the cheap mousepads or the razer cloth gaming pads that i picked up at a gun show a year ago. i'm an avid shooter so since it had a gun disassembly diagram (its marketed as a gun cleaning mat...) i had to have it. virtually identical performance though to a plain black mousepad.

one thing to keep in mind however... avoid mousepads with high contrast changes in color as it could screw with the sensor.

In other words "The one with the cute multi colored kittens" on it. Besides, who would be cruel enough to rub a mouse on a cats face all day? Besides, kitten faces are way over priced compared to a basic black mat.

no, i was mostly referring to black and white mousepads with either text or designs on them. the contrast change can make the mouse cursor jump since it confuses the mouse sensor. some other high contrast changes can also cause a similar effect. this is why i like to stick with solid black.
