Are my GPUs dead?

Wanted to add an extra GPU to my system but I only had a single 16x slot so I decided to buy one of those PCI-E 1x to 16x adapters.

Tried to plug one card into the adapter and pc couldn't boot, swapped the cards, still nothing, tried them one by one directly in the PC's PCI port, still nothing.
Just a black screen.

The fans spin normally but the PC just can't boot.

So are my cards dead?
And if so, would the warranty cover it?

Did your adapter have a molex to supply power? PCIe x1 can only supply up to 25w, and if your GPU uses less than that you could've just broken off the back of the slot instead of using an adapter.

If it tried to draw 75w from a 25w slot, then it's more likely the motherboard than the cards. Try clearing the CMOS to see if it boots with IGP or one card. If it still doesn't work then a 3rd card would help isolate the problem.

The real problem is that I absent mindedly tried to add a GPU while my PC was on.
The GPUs are fine but the mobo is fried, sorry for the wasted thread, I would close it but I don't know how.
