My gpu sits around 42C idle, but when i game temps hit as high as 93C with fans to 100%. I have temp target set to 80C and fans set to auto. Is this normal? should I be worried, I have a full tower case with plenty of airflow. My old 780 doesnt go past 83C full load and 80% fanspeed with the same settings in precision x. If anybody can tell me what I should do, i appreciate it. And btw I got this second hand so I probably cant RMA it.

That's a little HIGH \ 93C.

As we alluded to earlier, NVIDIA has maintained the familiar 80C default temperature limit for GTX 980 that we saw on all other high-end GPU Boost 2.0 enabled cards.

The ASUS GTX 980 STRIX DC II OC idled at 27c with its fans off. The fans do not kick on until the GPU core temperature begins to rise. This demonstrates how well the video card is designed to save power, and also its efficiency. When we load into game and increase the system to full load, the ASUS GTX 980 STRIX DC II OC's temperature rose to 65c. The fans kicked on here and ran at 44%. With our max overclock applied, we also increased the fans to 100% to maximize GPU Boosts capacity. The temperature only reached 62c with fans at 100% and the overclock applied.

The ASUS ROG R9 290X MATRIX-P ran much warmer, idling at 32c with its fans running at 30%. With the system under full load the temperature shot up to 81c. This is 16c warmer than the ASUS GTX 980 STRIX DC II OC. Overclocking the ASUS ROG R9 290X MATRIX-P increased the temperature another 13c up to 94c, even with fans at 100%.

Both of these video cards have an excellent cooling device from ASUS. What this comparison really pulls into the picture, is how much more efficient the GTX 980 GPU is compared to the R9 290X. The results are in, and the numbers don't lie.

So what do you think I should do any suggestions?

This card should run cooler that 90C when playing games if the case is really well ventilated. I owned regular GTX980 and also an ASUS GTX970 Strix that has the same cooler like GTX980 Strix, and the cooler cools down the card really well and better than the regular blow-fan version. This sounds to me that the heatsink may not be in proper contact with the GPU or the bent heatpipe is not working properly. By the way, the side panel for my case is removed, so the airflow is perfect.
