Are the PCIe 1x compatibly with PCIe 2.0 or 3.0 or PCI 2 and it doesn't drain power or something?

Hello, so this is my situation... I have a asus z87-plus motherboard with three PCI spots left, and I wan't to connect a PCIe 1x into them and they are all either 2.0 16x or 3.0 16x I believe, so my question are can I connect the PCIe 1x into them WITHOUT any trouble or loosing of performance/power. I know that they can connect from other threads but they were vague on whether or not I loose anything from it, One source told me it depends on motherboard so i thought i'd ask you here before i contacted Asus. Also be aware that my computer knowledge isn't top notch so some of the information about the PCIe might be wrong. ^^

It's all good. You will not lose any performance by installing a wifi card. If you have a gpu installed, which I'm guessing you do, use slot 4. Keep the airflow unimpeded around the gpu as best as possible.

Slot 4 is busy, that's why i'm unsure, and because i heard that it might make my gpu loose perfomance if i use it on a larger slot that wasn't ment for PCIe 1x I have GTX 780 as GPU and it covers the first slot and it uses 2nd and 3d and i have a capture card on slot nr 4. I'd rather get USB if i loose performance. ^^

If you put it in slot 5, it will make the motherboard cut half of the bandwidth from slot 2 and divert it to slot 5. You don't want that. But using slot 7 is fine, as is slot 1 and 4.

In that case, you will be better off with a usb dongle for wifi. The performance difference should not be noticeable if you have a decent router. You might also want to look at a second router as an access point.

Thank you, I just needed to be sure before I ordered the wifi card. How sure are you however? You might not be 100% but I just want more stuff to make me feel more comfortable about my decision.

I disagree. There's nothing wrong with using slot 7 (the bottom full-size slot) or slot 1 (the top x1-sized slot).

The CPU provides the PCIe connection to the graphics card, and with a Z87 chipset that can be split to two slots. Those slots are the top two full-size PCIe slots. All the other slots are handled by the chipset, and an x1 card can go in any one of them. It won't make any difference.

I didn't say there is anything wrong with using 7, I just said in this instance I think a dongle would be a better solution. I personally don't like using a full size slot for pci 1. JMO

Also Mark, I don't mind using a full size slot for PCIe x1 as i wont get any new PCI cards for quite a while and if i ever do SLI than it won't be before in a year or two and than i'd live in another place were I could go wired anyway. ^^
