Hi,
I was doing research, and realized that AMD has pretty good cpus, but according to benchmarks they draw quite a bit more power and require an extra investment for cooling. Ex: an i5 system 110 watts, and a FX 8 core system 185 watts under load. Power consumption is crucial for me! So the question is, are there existing or upcoming AMD desktop or laptop cpus that are comparable to Intels' in terms of power comsumption and performance? And cheaper :)

Solution
There are a few potential chips on the horizon from AMD that may match Intel products in performance per watt, however at the moment they do not. Intel are ahead in this regard. Within a given power envelope, in general Intel products have greater performance.

Potentially some of the new laptop chips and low power devices may come very close, but as a general rule at the moment Intel are the leaders in performance per watt.

If you factor in price, you will find that AMD are very competitive with certain Intel products. Again, however, this is often at the expense of power consumption.

In terms of the products in future - take current rumours with a pinch of salt. AMD are the underdogs now, and this endears them to people, often...
Only if you go for APU AMD is more efficient. Intel have poor graphics. AMD have GPUs. Intel don't manufacture GPUs. Anyway NO AMD CPU matches Intel in performance/ power consumption. Even the TDP says it all.

AMD are the underdogs now, and this endears them to people, often causing short sighted blanket statements to take place. Both companies are moving forwards, but Intel are moving off from a higher vantage point. The smart money is on Intel continuing to lead, however I am sure many of us would love to be surprised by AMD.

Solution
Unfortunately, AMD has no APUs or CPUs that are comparable to Intel's CPUs in terms of power consumption and performance. Ever since Intel released the Core 2 Duo / Quad CPUs back in 2006 they have taken the performance crown back from AMD and ever since then the performance has only increased.

AMD's integrated graphics is naturally more powerful than Intel since they acquired ATI Technologies back in 2005 or so. However, considering that Intel has only really started to focus on graphics performance with the Intel HD 3000 (2nd gen Sandy Bridge Core i3/i5/i7) back in 2011, Intel has come a long way in such a short amount of time.

The only area where AMD might be competitive with Intel is in the very low end CPU line where AMD's Puma core APUs (successor to the Jaguar core APUs) competes with Intel's Bay Trail Atom CPUs. They are officially known as Beema APUs. However, I have not seen any Beema APU benchmarks yet.

I see.. I'll pay closer attention to AMD's APUs. Hopefully they'll bring some more innovative things to the market. Mantle seems to be a nice thing on the paper. I guess with that technology GPU takes over some of the CPU's work in games. If they could implement it to various types of apps, it could close the gap... Anyways, thanks again.
