Are there any compatibility issues with amd gfx cards and Intel processors?

I was talking about a build recently and i raised the topic of getting an r9 and an i5. A friend said that it will drop performance with the difference. Is it true that it lowers performance and if so, how much? (example was an R9 270X and an intel 3470 3.2 Ghz)
