"number crunching" depends on the CPU and RAM, not the drive.
NVMe SSD vs SATA III SSD won't make much if any difference in this use case.

My ASRock Z97 motherboard and i7-4790k supports an NVMe drive, but only at x2 performance. Not much better than a SATA III drive, and only in those uses where it matters. For your use, it won't.

You can always buy a M.2 PCIe adapter card.

Most Z97 Chipset model motherboards support M.2 PCIe drives. These early versions usually delivered up to 10 Gb/s data transfer speeds. Adding an M.2 adapter card for the PCIe slot could double that speed up to 20 Gb/s data transfer speeds.
