greetings, to sum it up,

i have a lga775 motherboard with an intel i946gz chipset. i can read the chipset maximum support is 800 mhz.

then i bought days ago a lga775 cpu , 3ghz, quad core, 1600 mhz....

my question is, if my maximum support is 800 mhz, and the cpu is 1600mhz, will the cpu be able to fit to a 800 mhz rate , thus spreading the multiplier to 15 ?

im not a expert in computer hardwares, as all i learn is from the internet.

i hope itll work cuz i didnt want to buy a cpu which wont work.

thank you !

Solution
You can't. You can use the lower FSB cpu on the MB that supports 1600mhz FSB, but not vice versa. Also you can use the 1600mhz FSB cpu run at 1066mhz FSB, that means unclock ( CPU speed = cpu multiplier * FSB). But if they are not compatible, then the PC will not boot, and you can't change it.

I just saw you post the cpu xeon, and what Mb do you have? You can check the manufacturers website to see the MB can support it or not.
ok i get it, but would it be possible to change the multiplier of the cpu , thus it could potentially drop from 1600mhz to 800mhz of rate ? thus it couldt work on this motherboard if i can do that

new cpu : intel xeon 3,0 ghz , 4 cores, FSB:1600 mhz; thus work with 7,5x multiplier;

if we could increase the multiplier to 15x, iit would get a FSB of 800mhz, thus working ?

No because the computer won't even boot to let you change anything.

yeah, its a little trick...

i planned to use a lga771 cpu on a lga775 motherboard, using a special converter ( they sell them on ebay really cheap, and it works ).

mm ok i understand :'(

this sucks 🙁 then how can i find a lga771 or lga775 mobo that support 1600mhz ??

it seems that is too expensive ? like 400 $ ??!?

well my chipset is maximum 800 mhz, and my BIOS dont allow change in cpu speeds.

my guess is that we cannot change the chipset to a better one that support 1600 mhz ? ( only chipset )

that will be better to change the mobo, right ??
