You won't be pushing that many frames at max settings but it's good

You should be able to get very good fps with that PC, but honestly, everything in that computer is very high end, except the AMD FX. I know your motherboard is for AMD, but if you could ever change it out and get an Intel i7 extreme edition processor, you should be able to run any game at max settings.

Don't waste an extra $100 on an i7 for gaming, the 4690k is all you need. Also you only need 8gb of ram for a gaming rig.

12 GB is a perfect amount, won't ever need to upgrade, and yeah any i7 x or i7 k would be good.

Most games only use up to 4 cores, so an i7 would be a waste of money unless he's doing a lot of video editing/rendering. i5 4690k is basically the go to CPU for most gaming builds. And 12GB is still a little excessive some modern games the recommended amount of ram is 6gb, so 8gb is plenty. However, if he's doing a little video editing having more RAM would benefit him.

I'd go with 4690k + 8gb of ram for mainly gaming
or
4690k + 16gb of ram for gaming + editing

The OP's question was:

Would these specs suffice for 1080p 120fps gaming on max graphics settings?

I asked what games because I think that answer is NO if every game is considered. For a start, some games are limited to 60FPS by the software, and I have yet to see a BF4 benchmark on a 970, at 1080p ultra at 120FPS, or even close. The same with Far Cry 4 ( and probably many/several other modern games)

I'm waiting for the OP to chime back in.

I'm not convinced that the suggestions above will get the OP to the 120FPS mark with any configuration using a single 970.
