Hi all!

I've set up a new gaming PC and ive been wondering if my CPU 7800x3d and Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 5 having high temps as much as table 86 in games normal?

My case is - Lian Li Lancool III , 3 front fans all working no issues, 1 back fan all working no issue, pleny of space in the case, ive used a smaller previous version of the Lancool and had no issues with the flow and generally even this loads the whole case is pretty chilly so it dissipates the heat well.

I did have the shop where i ordered the parts from just assemble it as i didn't have the time to do it myself this time... and i fear they might have forgot the Thermal Paste, as the one with the CPU Cooler was not used. Is it normal that the 7800x3d run so hot in games? I know its a hot processor, but even max loads through benchmark people report 82-85C, while in-game most people say they get 77-80 at most... while im running at whopping 86 in games like Star Wars: Outlaws. I tried some PUBG too and it hit 92C and even shut down my PC once.

Idle temps are also pretty high at 55-60 at times, and often while running programs that download stuff etc it sits at 70-72C.

Coming from 5600X with a much cheaper CPU Cooler i never really hit more than 75 in both games i mentioned, is that differnce normal? Or i should really take the CPU out and repaste it and all?

MBD: ASRock B650M Pro RS
CPU: Ryzen 7800x3d
GPU: Gigabyte RTX 4090 Windforce V2 (honestly it runs super cool... like never goes above 65-70)
CPU cooler: Be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 5
RAM: 2 x 16GB DDR5 6000 G.SKILL Flare X5 AMD EXPO
SSD: 2 x 1TB WD Black SN770
PSU: 850W be quiet! Pure Power 12 M Gold 80+
Chassis: Lian li lancool III
OS: Windows 11
Monitors: 4k Samsung and 1080p AOC

EDIT:
Here my temps and info from HWInfo sensor while running AC Odyssey on Ultra - 86C temp never goes up or down -

Idle is high, should be in the 30s. Too much paste or not enough pressure? Get an Am5 socket guard, some Noctua Nh1 paste if have none. Paste on hand with cooler is fine. Spread paste with cling wrap on finger everywhere on cpu leaving a mm from edges, this is without am5 guard. Idea is thin layer over most surface, most heat transfer possible to heatsink. Tighten cooler to max then a few turns back.

Thanks for the reply! Will get on that!

Also should i assume the issue is most likely thermal paste and not proper set up CPU cooling? Also i understand the idle's are bad, does that mean the in-game temps are normal? Tested it on a few bigger games, all seem to sit at 86C.

Depends on the game, plus output form the graphics card passing by, temps can vary. It's best have a normal base line for warmer whether.

Thermal paste in use is likely fine, it's more of the spread and tension. Not too tight though.

Will reapply the thermal paste next week, will try and get a good one.

Still i read mixed reviews, some say its normal to run hotter at 80+ while gaming, majority say , they run at 75-77 at most while gaming. I don't really understand what is normal honestly anymore haha.

On the 4k monitor its around 83C during games like AC Odyssey/Valhalla on Ultra settings, and on 1080p monitor they go to 86C(kinda obvious since its more on the CPU then). But still i expected it wouldn't get so close to 89C.

I read someone post on reddit that when spoken with AMD, they mentioned its fine if they run hot, and some people say its fine if it runs even at 85/86C it won't hurt it..

It's funny because no matter what it sstuck at 86C when running those "AAA" games at Ultra, it doesnt go higher, its like its in a sweet spot. Someone with the same CPU cooler mentioned they got no more than 75C in-game so i was worried..

P.S: I was worreid about my 4090 going hot as hell, but even on 4K it wont reach 70.. and just sits on 65C even on Ultra in AC Odyssey/Valhalla, which is amazing and its super quiet as well.. I hope i didn't choose the wrong CPU...

Repasting and re-mounting the CPU cooler, sadly made no change. Temps are still the same. Is the CPU Cooler just bad for this build? I see people using cheaper ones and still get better temps than me.

The first job the PC shop i bought from actually did a good job, everything was really well placed too. I'm super confused.

Cooler is even running on Performance mode, both fans working everything set correctly..

See this thread and last reply.

Could try run 99% max processor state in Windows power plan for certain games raising extreme temps. Lose a good chunk of turbo boost though doing that but should lower temps dramatically.

Thanks for advice. Honestly ive read about the 99% power and undervolting. I don't really want to do either of those, if i can just keep the current temps. What nobody is able to answer if stock settings is ok to go this high on this CPU... everyone is undervolting and putting power to 99%... spending so much money on CPU and having to do extra work to make suer it runs properly is a bit ridicilous..

I'm assuming you did check, if they have not left protective plastic film on cpu cooler?

Well.. i didn't want to believe it.. 2 shops ... 2 big shops my PC went through... and both did not remove the plastic.. after getting angry today after it got repasted... i went in and said.. xxxx it.. i'm opening it myself.. Guess what... the freaking plastic as left on...

From 86 degrees to 72C instant... im running a game on Ultra at 1080p 250FPS currently as im writing this, have 10 tabs open on chrome, the HWinf osensor, dsicord and 3 more apps... and im running 72.6C, im getting max 73.6... I don't know what to say.. honestly... I used to live in my capital city and there was this great shop that fixed my last PC... and got me great cooler etc and i miss them so much.. they are 10 times smaller shop but do 1000 times better job than this 2 big outfits i went to get my PC looked at... So much money..

I'm sorry to anyone who i annoyed with this thread.. and i'm sorry for my neglicence , let this be a lesson to anyone else...

zen4 is a hot little cpu my 7800x3d is currently idling at 41c with a 360mm arctic freezer ii

ive tried about 5 different coolers on the 7800x3d ranging from a deepcool ak500 digital , noctua u12a thermalright evo 120 dual tower to NZXT x63 280mm aio and now back to a 360mm arctic ..

all coolers were with in the same range idle around 50c and around 75 80c under load in allcore r23

just tested all core R23 with the 360mm arctic as i type this75c to 80c !!

55c idle is fine and 70c to 80c is the normal ( remember temps are also based on your current room temp or climate)

I managed to fix it, now im getting 40C idle and 72-74C in game. The initial shop that assembled it left the Plastic. After someone mentioned to repaste it... i gave it to a local shop, to check it, while i was out of town for the day.. got it today when i got back from my trip and still same issue.. I took it apart myself both intial asembly and PC repair shop, forgot to remove the plastic from the CPU cooler.. Now everything works as intended, im surprised it even cooled it with the plastic on... which was causing so much issues on my end.

Thanks for letting me know your actual temps tho, everyone keep saying they are undervolting and don't want to see anything over 65C in-games..(i just don't want to undervolt and do all those extra stuff) i don't care if it runs hotter, but having it on 86C was not normal for sure, when people with same settings as me had it in the 70's with same cooler. Can't believe such a big PC selling retailer in my country made such a big mistake and the PC build is pretty expensive for here, its not something they handle on regular basis(their words on the phone) disappointment is immeasurable.

yeah undervolting is often used but me i dont offen other than for testing/bit of fun over clock or under volt CPUs or GPUs i usually run them stock ..

If im not cooling my CPU well ill just slap a bigger cooler on it !!

Haha honestly, before finding they left the plastic i was going to go and order a Kraken 360 AIO since i was getting frustrated. Every post i found was saying 7800x3D doesn't really need that kind of cooler, but i have the same mentality.. not cooling to my needs? Buy something bigger and better lol.

I guess changing the cooler was going to reveal the plastic issue too.
