Are these temps okay? (i7 4790k + Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO)

Okay, I recently upgraded from a stock cooler which was giving me completely HORRID temps (up to 95c) while rendering some things with my trusty i7 4790k (running at stock speeds). I upgraded to a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO which was recommended to me by an immense number of people, and it seems to be a pretty solid cooler according to the internet, lol. Well, I booted up after installing (no problems, because I'm a pro B) ) and I ran prime95 to torture my cpu with my newly installed cooler and in about 10 mins I hit 77c, but it stayed there, went down, and then came back up. It did not go above that. Are those okay temps for a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO with Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste?

Yeah thats fine. You can get to 105'C before you start doing damage.

1. Artic Silver, according to their web site, takes 200 hours if thermal cycling to cure which makes it a not very good choice if you want to set up your system right away. As a system builder, I gotta get the boxes out the door in 48 hours so I don't have that kinda time. Keep in mind, they didn't say 200 hours under load, they said 200 hours of thermal cycling. To my reading, starting up the PC, running it for 8 hours and then turning it off is 10 minutes of cycling (5 warming up and 5 cooling down).

2. The Hyper 212 is a great budget cooler.....no one will argue that. But that's a long way away from saying it's a great cooler. The Phanteks PH-TC14-PE, Thwermalright Silver Arrow an Noctua DH-14/15 will generally get ya 7 - 10C more of a temp drop.

3. Prime 95 is not recommended for Haswell. Because of its ability to bombard the CPU with AVX, a wholly unrealistic scenario in actual practice, it presents an unrealistic loading and at the same time it doesn't stress parts of the instruction sets at all. x264 or RoG Real Bench and even AIDA 64 are better choices..

4. 77C is not unusual for that loading. I usually see like 62 with one of the 3 coolers above. It hit 85 on OCCT with the stock cooler.

I read your comment and have taken it onboard. I am having the same issues also (about deciding the best reliable cool // bang for buck scenario).

I am also heavily considering the evo 212 but I am torn. As right now my CPU, courtesy of the load produced by playing GTA V is running temperatures of 90 and above with the stock HSU. Great times obviously.

Could you perhaps give me some advice as to what would be best for myself? Would the 212 be adequate to reducing those temps down to safer ranges??

For me Cooler Master 212 EVO was an excellent upgrade from my stock cooler of Intel i7 4771 3.5GHz! I bought it for 35€ 2days ago, applied thermal paste which was in the package with it and started it up in 15mins and started gaming. CPU temperatures were 20 degrees lower or more on full load. Was testing with Battlefield 4 and Far Cry 4. Before i was hitting even 72 degrees even with replacing new thermal paste and performance dropped to 5-10fps when cpu overheated (maximum load temp for this cpu is 72).
With Evo 212 I don't go over 50-52! In windows 28-34.. Very satisfied. Worth every penny.
