I want to build a PC to run games in 2560x1440 at 144Hz, with the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278Q. I'd like to know if the following specs are overkill:

CPU: i7-4790K
GPU: GTX 980 Ti
RAM: 16 GB

These are the games that I want (some of them are yet to be released):

Abzû
ERA
A Night In The Woods
Castle In The Darkness
Cradle
Doom 4
F1 2015
Forza Motorsport 6
Full Throttle Remastered
Hollow Knight
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Infinitesimals
La-Mulana 2
Life Is Strange
Mirror’s Edge
Mirror’s Edge Catalyst
Mighty No. 9
Mortal Kombat X
Never Alone
No Man’s Sky
Ori And The Blind Forest
Portal
Portal 2
Ride
Rise Of The Tomb Raider
Seasons After Fall
Shelter
Shelter 2
Slime Rancher
SOMA
Subnautica
Tekken 7
The Last Guardian
Tomb Raider
Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries
Xing: The Land Beyond

Thanks!

A few things:

CPU: i7-4790K is two years old. Why not go for 6700K?

GPU: a single GTX 980 Ti is the minimum graphics card configuration that you should consider for 1440p @ 144 Hz. Granted, many of your games require very low GPU power, but some of the more demanding ones may require 2 x 980 Ti's in SLI. If I were you, I'd start off with one card and see if it provides a sufficient amount of performance. If not then you can always add a second card.

PSU: To allow you a more future-proof build, don't purchase less than an 850 watt tier 1 power supply. I personally like the EVGA G2 850.

Display: The ASUS ROG PG278Q was a highly hyped monitor last year. But are you aware that their is not a newer model that is 1440p 165 Hz...

Display: The ASUS ROG PG278Q was a highly hyped monitor last year. But are you aware that their is not a newer model that is 1440p 165 Hz? It's the PG279Q. Please be aware that there are quality assurance issues with both older and newer displays of both models. You need to thoroughly research them before pulling the trigger and buying either one. The newer PG279Q is probably still at the USD$800 price point, while you'd probably save $100 by going with the PG278Q. The Acer 1440p 144 Hz is apparently the display to beat, although it has an annoying glossy finish, which annoys many people. But the panel itself is apparently amazing.

In answer to your question, no your specs are not overkill. I recommend that you use PCPartPicker.com to help you sort out your build and budget.
