I went to purchase a set of 32gb quad channel ram and my local electronics store did not have them in stock so I got two identical sets of 2x8 dual channel sets. Is it the same thing as one 4x8 quad channel set?

Unfortunately not. The reason that memory is sold in matched pairs and quads that have been tested together is that modern memory is so finicky that it doesn't "interoperate" the way that it should. So if you buy two identical pair kits, they may work together at the specified timings, they may work together with reduced timings and higher voltage, or they may not work together. IMHO, it's a crying shame.

Well thing is I've already purchased them and have been using them fine for two weeks. I didn't realize at the time that the packs of four were for quad channel and the packs of two wre for dual channel so I was wondering if the two packs of dual channel would work in a quad channel configuration. But I also forgot the z170 platform is a dual channel platform anyway so it doesn't matter. I'm not having any issues so I'm fine.
