Are Western Digitals stable/reliable hard drives?

I've only had their externals (thus barely ever use them so no change for them to fail).. but on the reviews on like newegg a LOT of people say they die early or are DOA

I've been using them since 1996, and I've had to two fail of about 30, both times they were under warranty. WD replaced them for the cost of my shipping them to WD after getting an RMA and mailing label online from WD. Buy either the Black or RE versions, they have 5 year warranties. According to WD, the REs are for RAID installations. The flooding in Thailand this summer has created a shortage, and today's prices are very high compared to last year.
