In Arena, how does one kill a troll? After one is down on the ground,
it twitches seemingly forever, then occasionally gets back up. There
appears to be no way to use fire on the corpse, and even after killing
with with a fire dart the corpse still twitches. My solution for the
two times I ran into them, was to sleep. When I woke up again (with
enemies nearby) the corpse was gone.

Similarly, I'm having difficulties with ice golems. Do weapons damage
these? I killed my first one with only a weapon, but it was the
object of a quest and may have not been a normal ice golem. The later
ones just have my sword clanking off them continually (thank heavens
for nearly free 1 point heals). I can use my fire dart, but that
takes up a lot of spell points. Is my agility too low to hit (at 70
points)?

I'm considering using shield spells or other defensive spells, since
the ice fortress was damned hard (ie, snow wolves, knights, ice
golems). There doesn't seem to be a time duration on shield, does it
have one, and if not how does it work? For other spells, how long do
"rounds" map to real time? That is, I want to cast the spell once and
not have to recast in the middle of a fight or check ever five minutes
to see if it's worn off.

There's an icon on the upper left that always has my photo, but it
occasionally changes to a white square with random dots (a bad
bitmap). What is this, and how to I get rid of it or fix it?

I think you only have to do enough damage to knock them down and then
leave the area, or you could just stand there and whack him each time he
starts to stand up.

Are you still using iron or steel weapons? In Arena and Daggerfall you
needed better quality weapons to affect different creatures. You should
have been able to find some ebony by now. The other option as you
pointed out is magic, but without potions or scrolls it really isn't an
option. When I played Arena I ran a Redguard knight and could not cast
any spells so I had to rely on my weapons.

There should be icons for any magical affects in the bottom left of the
screen, much like in Morrowind.

The icon in the top is your current health, as you are wounded it should
turn red. If you are poisoned it should turn green. I don't remember
the other conditions.

Yes, only steel. It's the best I've found. I've got an artifact
quest for ebony sword, but I was going to put it off until after I had
the second staff piece. But if ebony is the best weapon type, and "by
now" refers to not yet 1/4 of the game having gone by, what's to look
forward to?

Bottom left is my portrait, and its background turns dark as I take
damage. It's a part of the normal row of icons, and I've noticed no
changes for spell effects. Whereas the portrait on the top left looks
like I'm escorting someone, when I'm not.

Normally by now you should be finding at least elven and dwarven weapons
on the bodies of your opponents. Mithril, adamantium, and ebony should
be available for sale. I don't know your current level, but if you are
only doing the main quest you might not be advancing fast enough to get
the weapons and armor you will need. Explore some of the other dungeons
or the wilderness. In the final confrontations you will want all the
advantages you can get. I finished the game wearing full ebony armor
including the ebony mail and wielding an ebony katana. Even then I went
through a lot of healing potions because of ranged magical attacks.

I will double check with my manual on this and get back to you.

I have found a dwarven dagger 🙂 I haven't seen much for sale in the
stores, but I don't always check. Nothing beyond chain mail for sale
either (that's the max I can wear, but I was hoping for maybe better
versions of it).

I'm level 12, and have the ebony sword now, so I'll see how it goes.
Two artifacts, so I'll skip the boring randomized dungeons now for a
bit.

You might still keep asking for rumors as that is how you find most of
the artifacts. You might also keep looking for a better bow for the
times you need to reach out and whack someone.

After the troll is down, use fire and/or acid spells, IIRC.

The "twitching" is like "throwing dice" to see when it gets up again. Same
is with
a vampire, for example. To kill a troll you need lots of Shock :)

Basically, a Force Bolt will do the trick; if it doesnt kill it instantly
(no twitching 😉 )
it will paralyze it and with one or two strokes it will die. Watch the
tongue 😉

Vampires need something else, didn't have chance to figure what yet, but
they do regenerate if
you kill them with non-fire magical weaponry. Hmm.

Ice golems need fire to die 😉 There's a few Marks, Crystals etc lying
around with
Flame throwing spells (forget the name). 2, max 3 of these and your ice
golem's a nice puddle 😉

Play as a battlemage. Great stuff they are. As long as you walk around
invisible, shielded
and having a Spell Receipt spell ready to receive spell points from the
cunning ghosts that
can still see you when invisible and try to drink up your magic energy,
you're laughing.
A nice ebony longsword wshould suffice plus a good defence in torcs etc,
as your armour
allowed is minimal.

That seems to me like memory problems.

But from what I can tell, you have to kill the troll while it's
standing up, otherwise your spells pass harmlessly over the corpse.
It's easy though to just walk far enough away that the game removes
the corpse.

I'm a spell sword. Walking around invisible and shielded seems
tricky. The spells wear off quickly, and you don't know when they've
worn off until you pop up the statistics screen or you start taking
damage.

I could go the route of using short integer overflows when making a
spell, but I'll hold off on that for now.

If your character's background is blue it is currently under some
magical spell or effect. Similarly if it is red you are under 10% of
your health, green you are being affected by poison or alchohol, and
yellow it is diseased.
