Ok, so from what I understand when you dye your armor you are actually dying
the slot, not the armor itself, so no matter what you put in that slot
should come out the dyed color, correct? Well, I dyed my chest slot white
and so far only one robe ever (the one I was wearing when I dyed it) has
been white. So what's the deal? Other robes I have put in that slot are a
blackend crystalline robe and a siren scale robe. Is it possible that these
robes are undyable? I mean, I could understand if the blackend crystalline
robe is, since it has its color in its name, but what about the other robe?
If this is the case, is there anyway to tell before I buy a new armor piece
whether or not it can be dyed?

The dye also depends on the armor's color. If it's neutural, your dye
color will show well but if it's colored (ie green) then your dye will
be mixed with the armor's color.

2 ways to get around that depending on the armor's color: adjust the
dye until the resulting color looks good or find a different armor
piece that doesn't have color. White is a hard one to get on many
armor pieces. I usually end up dying my armor in dark color so I can
keep the best pieces and not worry about ugly or uneven colors.

Armors (and especially robes) tend to have a "base" color pattern.
Dying the armor only puts a tint over that base color. Dying your
chest slot white only removes additional tinting on a robe, leaving
the base color pattern there.

Did you say something, "bob" <dlv88@comcast.net>?

All robes are just a handful of different patterns with a colored
overlay, the same way all plate is the same plate texture but with a
different color overlay. The dyes let you determine the color of this
overlay for a given slot, but the shade of what you wear in that slot
will be different if it is leather, chain, plate or any given robe.
The BCS is a flowing black robe texture with a blue/green overlay, so
the white dye gives you a black robe with red and purple details.
Similarly, the siren scale robe is a kedge robe with a blue overlay,
so the white dye gives you whatever the kedge robe looks like.

Basically, as a robe wearer, if you want to be white, you have to get
a robe without any details, which is white in the basic texture. I
recommend lucy for looking up what your robe will look like;
http://lucy.allakhazam.com/item.html?id=25603 is the entry for
blackened crystalline robe. You'll want robes where the appearance tag
is 'plain robe' in order to be white.
