In the unmodified game, Glass, Indoril & Ebony are the best generic
armours. However, you can usually find unique armours that are better in
every way than the best generic armour of a given weight.

Indoril armor is ugly. Adamantium (available with both official
patches and with Tribunal) is about as effective and MUCH prettier.
Silver also goes well with blue clothing. Orcish armor looks even
better, but is not nearly as good. Except for that stupid orcish
helm. For a fresh character, a trove of Orchish armor is a real find.
Bonemold looks good, and can be bought at the beginning of the game
from smiths (eg. in Balmora, from the wood elf). If a complete set of
medium armor is too weighty, just use the cuirass and another piece or
two.

Glass is popular since it is light weight. For "light armor", though,
I prefer to use bound armor. That is even lighter (being weightless)
than glass and trivial to repair, even in the heat of battle. Glass
armor often ends up in little chips on the floor in tough battles.
Glass armor does look impressive, though. Until if falls to the floor
in itsy little chips. The Cepholopod helms are very enchantable. And
very flimsy. Take hammers with you. (The weight of the smiths
hammers somewhat offsets the lightness of the armor poundage.)

Ebony is extremely tough, and looks good. You'll be as impervious as
a mountain in ebony. And almost as mobile. Daedric looks very cool,
especially if you are into black. It is even heavier than ebony. The
Pauldrouns and shields can be enchanted with constant strength
sufficient to make them "weightless" when worn, however. Daedric
would look good with red clothing, if there were any good high quality
red clothing in the game. (some mods help this defecit.) Daedric
helms are very enchantable.

There are many excellent cuirass in the game of heavy and light armor.
(I don't recall any of medium armor, though.) Popular ones you can
get relatively early in the game: Lord's Mail (ask around Ebonheart),
the Dragonbone mail (in a grotto SW of ebonheart) and the Cuirass of
the Savior's hide (neatly placed in a chest in Tel Fyr--hey, Fyr
INVITES you to steal his stuff--he's very bored). All three are
acquirable by relatively low level characters--but none is trivial to
pick up.

Dreugh is okay enough... the cuirass has a 40 rating and doesn't look
half bad. The helm... now that's another story. 😉

I found that quite early in the game while stumbling through the main
quest and taking my time to explore the locations. Absolutely
overpowered in my opinion. With glass and this cuirass my Nightblade got
better armour values than my warrior character in heavy armour with
roughly the same skill level (~85). Unsure if that makes sense.

It's artifact armor- naturally its going to be massively
overpowered compared to regular light armor. On the other hand,
it's not overpowered to say, the heavy artifact armor, like the
Curiass of the Savior's Hide.

That's just the way Morrowind is- there's some magic items in the
game that can't be duplicated by players.

Ah, then you might find the 'Bound Armorers Hammer' mod to be of
interest. I got it from
http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/modcontrols/mods_full.asp
just search for bound armorer and you'll find it.

I've loaded the LaFemme mod but can't find the armorers who sell it.
My present lady has the Lords Mail so probably won't get armor nearly
as good so what's a poor girl to do?>

Orcish armor is the most readily accessible high value armor in the
game - unless (like me) you're currently into hunting Ordinators.

DEFINITELY take hammers with you - it's the best way around for a
non-fighter to build up their strength.

Bonemold armor is also an early find in dungeons and
shrines for level 1-6 characters
