Armor upgrading recipe

I have a rare torso plate with nice mods. It came with two sockets, and
I put two perfect gems in there to suit my characters needs.

I still like the mods very much, but my character grew and would enjoy a
higher defense now.

If I use the recipe, will the torso plate keep it's mods and the gems or
will it become a 'new' rare item of the exceptional type with different
mods?

As far as I know only the item base will be upgraded. The mods will
remain the same. I haven't tried this with socketed item. I think that
the sockets and the gems will remain also.

Only the 'base item' below will be upgraded. So if it was originally a
'Breast Plate', it will become a Cuirass (IIRC) after upgrading. Mods,
sockets, and stuff in those sockets stays the same.

Keep in mind there is a bug with upgrading ethereal armors: after
upgrading, the armor remains ethereal, but the 50% ED bonus of an ED armor
is 'lost'.

This is why you rarely see people upgrading an ethereal Duriel's Shell, or
Skullder's Ire.

And finally, the costs of the recipe above (1Ral, 1 Thul and 1 PAmethyst,
about equal to 3 pgems) can get you probably a quite nice unique armor in
the trade channels...

Regards,

Patrick.

Perfect. That's just what I need :)

I didn't know that. Thanks for the hint!

Maybe I should trade more. But I must learn more about the prices and
values first. 3 pgems for a good armor doesn't seem to be expensive (yet
I didn't know that a Ral or Thul count as much as a pgem, I rated them
lower, at least the Ral). I seriously have no idea what I could get for
those.

I've been looking at my own armor collection, there are a few spare
unique armors that I have, but this rare torso plate is hard to replace
because it's kind of tailored to my needs, and fits very well with the
rest of my equipment. OTOH even if upgraded it has lower defence than
the other armor options that I have.

I'll think a while about the problem. If the rocket sorc doesn't show
potential she needs no armor anyways.

You're welcome. :)

Just to mention it; it's sometimes very tempting to do the upgrade,
especially for an ethereal Duriel's Shell or an ethereal Skullder's Ire,
but chances are quite large the result has less defense than a regular
upgraded variant.

It's also a bummer if you found the 'perfect' high ed, nice mods,
ethereal, auto-repaire rare armor, and want to up it to get a huge amount
of def.

But, actually, unlike weapons, there's not much chance of a 'good' rare
armor being rolled; they're easily outclassed by a lot of unique armors.

The Ral is probably worth more than the Thul, for use in several recipes,
f.i. the caster amulet recipe I use my Rals for. I value a Ral equal to
any pgem. Most other people do too.

I think you need another Skin of the Vipermagi, or lacking that, a
Que-Hegan's for her. :)

be careful with the upgrade when you plan to use the armor for your sorc, as
the strength requirement will increase significantly.
sorcs dont like much strength, unless you really want that spirit shield.

The cuirass needs 65 str. My sorc has 'native' 60 str, and +12 from the
rare belt that she found recently. So upgrading the torso plate to a
cuirass is a suitable option at no extra cost of attribute points.

But thank you for your warning!

I know that other items have bad jumps in their requirements - actually
even in this case it more than doubles.

I assume she'd like both options very much. Maybe I should try to trade
one, because I'll surely try another sorc even if the rocket sorc build
fails. So it won't be wasted.

No. 1 on the current wishlist are frostburns, though.

I don't have a spare Skin of the Vipermagi (I have one, on a mule, but
it's reserved for the FB/Mystery sorc). I do have a spare Que-Hegan's for
you.

>No. 1 on the current wishlist are frostburns, though.

I also have at least 1 pair of those left, somewhere. 😉

Ask this evening.

Regards,

Patrick.

You are very kind.

I want to tell a story: I played my assassin a few days ago, and rushed
someone through nightmare. He finally wanted to see my equipment. The
amulet awakened his interest and he wanted to trade for it. I replied
"It's a gift from a friend, I don't trade it". He argued that even if it
is a gift, it's now mine and I can do with it what I want.

I refused to trade it.

I tell this, because I want to let you know that I value your gifts very
much, and I'll hold them in high esteem.

I'll happily use the Que-Hegan's, but I also want to tell that if you
ever should need it, it'll only take a word and it's yours again.

But your sorceress, what will she wear?

No problem, I'm only giving away pixels and bits, and the acquirement of
those pixels and bits already gave me a lot of fun. Helping someone by
giving them some of these pixels and bits gives me even more pleasure,
knowing that someone makes good use of it.

Thanks for relating this story, nice to hear. But don't feel obliged to
hold on to them that much; they're yours, and yours to do with as you
want. So if you can get a good deal on one of those items, go for it! :)

>I'll happily use the Que-Hegan's, but I also want to tell that if you

No worries, it's gladly given. I've been trying to trade one of those
Que-Hegan's armors for quite some time (asking for just a few pgems), but
no-one ever bit. So I get infinitely more pleasure from it when I know
your sorc is wearing it, instead of it rusting away on a mule of mine.

>But your sorceress, what will she wear?

Not really decided yet, but off the top of my head:

- Shako
- Skin of Vipermagi, perhaps upgraded
- Occulus (or something else if I don't like the Occy, perhaps Eschuta's
or HotO)
- Probably another Spirit Monarch, I like this baby
- Perhaps the one spare Tal's Amulet I have, otherwise a rare one
- Magefist
- Boots undecided
- Belt: some kind of caster belt
- Rings: rare FCR rings, with hopefully loads of mana/life/resists. (I
only have to find those! :)

Backpack: charms to fix resists (when/where necessary), and some +mana
grand charms. I don't have any skillers for her.
