Question ARRIS SB8200's 2 ethernet port.

Oct 17, 2019
There is 2 ethernet port on this modem, and it is just a modem, not a router. Since there is two ethernet ports, can I plug one into the router and one into my computer? Thanks in advance.
Only if the ISP gives you 2 IP addresses which they almost never do. It is not the number of ports that is the restriction it is the number of ip addresses. There are cases like a apartment building the ISP will put in a modem and connect it to a switch and run ethernet cables to each apartment. It will then give IP addresses to each apartment.

What the second port is suppose to allow you to do is combine the ports to get 2gbit. No ISP offers that service yet and even with they do there are limitation with the port aggregation algorithm that will likely make it hard to really get 2gbit.

The Arris SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem is equipped with two 1 Gigabit Ethernet Ports. One port is used for the typical setup to connect one device (Wifi Router or Computer). Second Port is used for adding additional IP address for internet services. Not all ISP providers offer IP address for residential service. So if you want to provide internet access to mulltiple devices, you need to replace your SB8200 with a modem router combo like a SBG8300. SB8200 doesnt come with advanced features like parental controls, port forwarding and inbuild wifi router so you need to buy external wifi router. And talking about Arris SURFboard SBG8300 is a AC2350 dual-band Wi-Fi modem router combo which is capable of supporting 32 downstream and 8 upstream channels with the modern DOCSIS 3.1 and can connect upto 45 devices (source). It also comes with 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports, so you can directly use these ports for cable connection to computer, television, game console, etc.
