The author seems of the story (https://www.tomshardware.com/news/oculus-controllers-secret-messages-discovered,39064.html) to miss the point that the messages were aimed at people reverse-engineering the controllers. That's why they were inside, where normal users wouldn't see them. When seen from that perspective, notes like "Big Brother Is Watching You" could make people think: "gee, will they know that I've opened and tinkered with my controller?" and maybe give them pause. The message "Hi iFixIt! We See You!" further supports this conjecture.

As for "The Masons Were Here" and "This Space For Rent", those seem rather frivolous, and dilute the point.

Anyway, I tip my hat to Oculus. I don't think they should've said anything about it. Maybe if directly asked by a tech reporter, but I wouldn't have just come out and announced it.
