Ok, I keep telling the idiots who run the network to change the refresh rate of the monitors in our school to 85Hz, cause a 17" @ 800x600 res can do that, but they haven't done so. Is there a formal article/ study somewhere which I can present to the principal to get him to get the admins to change it (yeah, I do hack some of the comps to change refresh rate, but I can't do it for everyone).

Dude, all the monitors at my school are set at 640x480 and 60Hz. One time I tried to raise the resolution to 800x600 on one of them - BAD IDEA. It went crazy and had all kinds of lines and you could see everything in about 4 different places. Apparently, I must have accidentally hit enter or something, because windows didn't change it back after 15 seconds. Anyway, it took me quite a while to change the resolution back because I couldn't tell which image was the real one. Plus I had to make sure my teacher didn't see.
I feel your pain, so I decided to google some stuff for you.

It didn't take me very long to find those. You could find a lot more if you wanted to.

Cool thx. Our comps are either P3 1Ghz w/ 16Mb TNT cards or 1.7Ghz P4 w/ 16MB Ati Rage cards, and for the most part m781mm Dell monitors. These can support 85Hz easily, and I have pushed it to 800x600 @ 100Hz. I know what u mean about the weird lines- used to happen w/ our old 700Mhz P3 comps w/ integrated vid cards. I'm going to give some articles to the principal with a request and mention that I have requested this several times but have been ignored.

Wow, good computers for a school. Were stuck with Celery 333's with crappy onboard video. The monitors are set at 800x600 and I think about 70hz (not that high, but not that low... I can tell).

It was funny the other day when just before leaving class I restarted one of the comps and pressed delete putting it into the bios... with a password. Our teacher went crazy, I told her that it just happened and she stood there for ages typing in passwords until I suggested restarting to resolve the problem  .

In my school there's this librarian who keeps on yelling at me cause when I wait for something to load I move the mouse around- she thinks I'm breaking the computer.

our school gets new comps all the time (about 1.4Ghz)
most with dvd drives and stuff event though they will never be used.

WHAT is really strange is that i went to the computer store to look at screens, they had all their screens set to 60-65Hz.
STUPID why would you have them set so low if you were trying to sell them (it really hurt my eyes) well anyway i was stuffing around with them and set one up to 95 or 96Hz (much better.

silly silly computer companys i say (not trying very hard to sell stuff are they)

Hmm, I spoke the idiotic admin AGAIN, and a) She had no idea what I was talking about b) She didn't care.

this could be more serious than you think!
a lot of people already have this and more!
perhaps it's about time to consult your eye doctor because a lot people get afflicted by this malady especially if they spend more than 5 hrs in front of the computer daily!

be carefull!

the Lord has only given us a pair with none to spare!

I spend perhaps at maximum (and this is rarely) 1.5 hours in front of those comps per day. generally though now I have one which I hack to 85Hz and use. At home, my monitor is at a nice 100Hz.

Everyone is diff, for me anything 75Hz and above is fine, i dont care who you are or what you say, 85Hz and up is FINE! You cant tell a flicker at all, maybe the monitor performs differently at 100 and is clearer, but it dosnt offer less eyestrain or flickeriness.

Neways...
OMFG public schools are SOO stupid!!!
All our monitors are also set at 800x600 @60Hz.

Flamethrower i think you should get a doctors note saying that you cant look at anything below 75Hz (or 85 if you insist) and give it to the teacher/principal.

DOWN WITH THE SYSTEM, DOWN WITH ADMINISTRATION!!! SCREW THE SCHOOLS!!! AAAGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
Ive had some BAD experiences at my school, but just remember, the schools have VERY LITTLE POWER HAHAHHAHHA!!!
If your parents are willing to fight for you, then you can really get away with alot!
If some stupid teacher is telling you something stupid tell them to "Buzz off". Theyll try to get you detention or something, but YOU CAN FIGHT IT! YOU CAN FIGHT ALOT OF STUFF!!!
FIGHT THE SYSTEM!!!
DOWN WITH PUBLIC SCHOOLS!!!

Im acting like this cause theres this CRAZY monitor at my school who claims me and some of my friends HARRASSED her and THREATENED her. WE NEVER EVEN SPOKE TO HER!!! There was a previous incident where she tried to get me detention for something and my dad fought it and i didnt get in trouble, and i guess that pissed her off and it escaladed from there. Now she filed a police report saying we harrassed and threatened her.
Were getting a lawyer and shes gonna get fired for sure!!!
Were getting her for libel, slander, and HARRASSMENT!!!
HAHAHAHHAAH!!!!!
FIGHT THE SYSTEM DOWN WITH PUBLIC SCHOOLS (and other crappy schools and gay administrations/management)

I dyed my body green, branded an "n" on my chest, and stood on a box in the middle of Time Square for 3 days shouting, "ATI is the Anti-Christ!" to boost sales after nVidia had a losing quarter.

Luckily, most of our monitors ared set at 800x600@85Hz. However, some are still set at 60Hz. So when we sit before the comps and find the screen flicking, we just hack it and change it to 85Hz.

lol. In my school I try to give the good boy impression (don't work anymore except for a few teachers) when in actuality when someone gets in trouble, it's my doing. Mwahaha. Right now I'm comfortably staring @ my FE791SB and loving it- have been doing quantum simulations for 9 hours straight, still am not feeling a thing.

There is only so much u can hack! I dun wanna write a proggie that spreads from comp to comp setting refresh to 85Hz cause that'd be classified as a virus and I'd get expelled. Nuts. I wonder if the principal will agree.

I lived with 60Hz for a long time and it was terrible. 75Hz or higher for me now.
