I'm thinking of doing an online rpg in the graphical style of ultima 6.
IMPORTANT NOTE : It will not be an Ultima 6 remake. It will use many of
the features I liked in Ultima 6, coupled with a few ideas of my own.
I do however need someone to do the graphics.
If interested please contact me at ozak_at_furi_dot_dk
Replace _at_ with @ and _dot_ with . for the correct email.

I've made a small demo of how I would like the game to look.
I used scaled copies of the ultima 6 tileset. Since the tileset did not
contain color key information, I just used white which is what causes it
to look a little funky at times.

I've also added a roguelike visibility algorithm.
We might be able to do it as contract work, although I don't have much
cash for it, since it's a hobby project.

Check out the demo here : http://homepage.mac.com/ozak

Please note that the engine uses java 1.4.2, so you'll need to get the
runtime from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html
If on OS X, you'll already have it installed. Otherwise run software
update.
The engine should run on all java 1.4.2 capable systems such as Windows,
OS X, Linux etc.

Hi,

A few comments about your engine. I guess it's still a little
immature, but nonetheless it might have been an idea to get
the demo more stable before requesting art.

Anyway, the following problems happened:

1. When invoked, the screen remains blank for about 50 seconds.
I admit my engine takes about this time to initialise, but
it is compiling about a hundred scripts and loading
around 15MB of graphics, and it tells the user what it's doing.

A progress meter or some other visual clue that the game
hasn't crashed would be handy, although playing Stones helps
a little.

2. Once the screen is no longer black, it draws a frame, but the
world is actually painted outside the frame. This is not good.
About 31 seconds later, a tentacled mess of black squares
appears. I guess this is the visibility engine, gone astray?

3. Why does it take 30 seconds for the avatar to respond to a
keypress? (And why does he shoot off so far to the right
after one keypress?)

It looks like it could have promise, but to be honest, it's
too early to tell. Either that, or my JVM is messed up.
I'm using this:

java version "1.4.2_05"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_05-b04, mixed mode)

You're using 32x32 sprites, right? I guess you could borrow some
of mine, but don't expect any portrait work (that's a problem I
haven't yet solved myself).

Another source of sprites is Lost's tileset, which isn't too
easy to get hold of these days, but I could supply it if need
be. They are something like 24x35, but with a little craftsmanship
you can refactor some of them to 32x32. Which I have done myself.
