Hi all,

I've got Ascendant Evincar in play, and my opponent put
Phyrexian Dreadnought into play face down using the ability of
Illusionary Mask. Does it die immediately as a state based effect
because of the Ascendant Evincar's ability, or can he immediately
flip the Dreadnought over so that it will live?

Ascendant Evincar
{4}{B}{B}
Creature -- Legend
3/3
Flying
Other black creatures get +1/+1.
Nonblack creatures get -1/-1.

Phyrexian Dreadnought
{1}
Artifact Creature
12/12
Trample
If Phyrexian Dreadnought would come into play, sacrifice any number of
creatures with total power 12 or greater instead. If you do, put
Phyrexian Dreadnought into play. If you don't, put it into its owner's
graveyard.

Illusionary Mask
{2}
Artifact
{X}: Put a creature card with converted mana cost X or less from your
hand into play face down as a 0/1 creature. Put X mask counters on
that creature. Play this ability only any time you could play a
sorcery. The creature's controller may turn the creature face up any
time he or she could play an instant by removing all mask counters
from it. This effect ends if the creature is turned face up.

Thanks!

It dies before anyone gets priority.

Since a continuous effect is giving it -1/-1, it comes into play as a -
1/0 creature and dies as soon as state-based effects are checked.
Therefore, notwithstanding the fact that turning it face-up does not use
the stack, it dies before its controller has a chance to turn it face-
up.

Okay, and oops.

It will die from a state-based effect - being 0 toughness (creatures face-down
from the Mask effect are 0/1, not 2/2) - before he gets priority again, so
before he can take any actions including special actions. He could turn it
face-up any time he got priority, but it will be dead and gone before he has
priority again.
