Aspect ratio scaling

Hello,

Got my new monitor today, Samsung S27D390H. Using 1920x1080p resolution, but it looks like everything in screen is a bit compressed (I believe it's aspect ratio 16:9). Is there a way to change it to 16:10 or to 3:2? In certain games, like Watch Dogs, there is scaling option, I switched scale from auto to 3:2 on 1080p and it looks nice now, but not all games have this option> Is there a global setting in Windows/nvidia panel/monitor panel to change aspect ratio?

Solution
Right, as your monitor is not meant to run that resolution, I mentioned it as you wanted to do 16:10 but your monitor is meant for 16:9, the closest 16:10 would be 1680x1050.

You can create your own resolution instead of using a preset (do know what you are doing).
You can make a resolution that is 16:10 and under scaling, as you found, keep it at the default that stretches it to use as much of the screen as possible, leaving black bars if the resolution does not fit the screen (16:9).

The native resolution for that screen is 1920x1080 as you write, which is 16:9, so that is what you should be running it at, 16:10 would be 1920x1200.

In the Nvidia control panel under screen you can change the resolution to a preset or create your own, though you should run that screen at 1920x1080 as that is its native resolution.

There is no such resolution as 1920x1200 for me. But 1920x1080 pretty hurts my eyes because of the scaling. Everything less - too, becasue screen on lower resolutions is not such bright. The lower one is 1680x1050.

Nvidia control panel doesn't have aspect ratio setting, just only "adjust desktop size and position". But it doesn't allows me to do anything with aspect ratio scaling.

Do you guys like 16:9?

And there is a lot of unknown settings when trying to create custom resolution like total pixels, polarity, sync width etc.

But the custom one won't work in the games, right?

Depending on what you are doing, those last (few) lines can be missed sometimes, but it is getting more and more difficult to find a 16:10 monitor, so yeah, for me, I got used to it, though I know some that complains that they are really missing those extra lines.

Edit for your extra question:
Yeah, most games have their own (standard) resolution settings.
You could choose 1680x1050 though and get a 16:10 picture, which would leave black bars at either side of the screen, not sure why you would though, you get the best result running at the monitors native resolution of 1920x1080.

Well, the output format of those can vary, it could be 720p, 900p, 1080p or something else entirely, but those are some of the standard resolutions.

Edit for your extra question:
With the influx of flat panel TVs and the standard of HD (720p) and Full HD (1080p), both of which are 16:9, that is what the panel makers are concentrating on and what is the most cost effective to produce compared to 16:10 panels.

Well, I hope best upcoming games like Assassin's Creed: Unity, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, GTA5 and Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor will have aspect ratio setting like Watch Dogs did...

Would I be able to connect my old monitor (LCD 22" T03 V223WABD ACER) and use both new Samsung and old Acer? Would my video card handle it? Let's say I would like to use old monitor for everything else and when go to play just turn it off and play on Samsung, when not playging back to Acer? Is it possible?
