Asrock 990fx killer (northbridge temps) question

so did my first water loop
and decided to get the 990fx killer..............

the first one i got (newegg) had some massive heat on the northbridge i decided since i already did custom loop i can easily add a block to it. i threw a 120mm 50cfm fan right infront of the heatsink to see if that would help, lone behold nothing still roasting hot like way to hot to touch for longer than 1 second (and i got "man hands" lol i worked with BB blasted metal/fresh welded steel I-beams,ect,ect) its f$%^ing hot

so i called newegg and they sent me a replacement and also gave me the phone number to asrock US. i spoke with some random tech who told me watercooling removes the passive air over main components near the cpu (yeah i know) i told him i had a 120mm fan blowing directly (active) on the heatsink and it still was roasting hot (idle temps mind you)
told me to put the stock cpu cooler on and i bet i would see lower temps

well the new motherboard came in
and i tried the stock heatsink for shits n giggle

still way to hot,

this is completely stock voltage,stock clocks, nothing over clocked 3.5ghz
ive turned on an off all settings in uefi bios (cool and quite, ce1,ect,ect ) hoping something would control this massive heat build up

i am unsure if the temps are still crazy hot. i have a feeling the northbridge is auxtin since it spikes to 63 within a minute (even with the waterblock)

or is the auxtin a rouge sensor/false reading? i have had a few blue screens dealing with ram on the original board (ran memtest86 multiple times on these sticks of ram with no errors)


i checked the manual/googled a few times if their is a specific sensor for it but no avail. any ideas?

i also tried undervolting the nb to 1.10v-1.20v (pretty sure first boot/default is 1.20v)

i just dont want to have a dead mobo after the 30day rma time frame, asrock has been no help and told me it is made to run hot? lolol

Kinda seems it's "made to run hot", no matter how good your water loop is, if the heatsink is a crappy one it won't transfer heat fast enough to keep temps low, what you could do is to change the heatsink itself for a better one (a copper one). That added to your water loop should vastly improve temps, just remember to apply new thermal paste in the process.

what do you mean change the heatsink its self? i removed the northbridge heatsink to add the water block.
and ofc thermal compound was added (arctic silver 5)

yes those are my gfs clothes for leak testing LOL

i have read that majority of the 990 chipsets run hot, hell even the 970s

i just wanted opinions on whether or not anyone has had 60-63 degrees on the nb and their mobo died/had a short life
id much rather rma it and get a gigabyte (ive only used gigabyte/msi for my builds) than keep this asrock and have to deal with them directly after the 30 days (im sorry but that tech support guy was a douche and hung up on me after i asked him if he knew the difference between passive and active cooling)

and if their is a sensor on this specific NB because from what i seen their isnt but im still weary of that 63 degrees on idle and it never goes up or down

even with the waterblock or stock heatsink/fan directly on it

I see, well I can't talk specifically about that board, but mine doesn't go over 55ºC under stress with it's passive cooling, hopefully someone who has the same board as yours will share their experience.

I have the same mobo in combo with an FX 8350, and i have the same temp, 63 degrees on the NB...which, after seeing you with custom water loop, having the same issue, tells me that the 990FX chipset is made to run at exactly that temp. It didn't go above or below 63 degrees, no matter what i did(gaming,stress testing, even put a small fan to blow on the heatsink).


I started a topic, because of this "problem", and also because of the fact that i'm getting 40 degrees at idle with an H80i and Arctic Silver 5.

The weird thing although, is that i played BF4 for about an hour, and the CPU temp(the one idling at 40) has gone all the way up to just..43 degrees....like WTF?
At this point i'm starting to think at two factors:
-Sensors are faulty, and inaccurate
-AS5 is still in break-in period..

I would very much like someone to enlighten me...

after going through 3 of the asrock fatal1ty 990fx motherboards/a few hours spent on the phone with newegg AND asrock US support

i returned them all and got a 990fxa-ud3 rev 4

if your having blue screens (i did and all my hardware ram,gpu,cpu HDD where tested working in other rigs)
return it or contact asrock for a replacement/see if you can get your money back

the northbridge temps in HWmonitor are said to be "off" or always show high (bad sensor?)
for that board but i was plagued with blue screens (i even reverted back to windows 7 just to see if it was aa drivers/windows 8 thing)

ive been running stable no blue screens, no "not posting/turining on" issues on the gigabyte board
if asrock wont help you contact the company you bought it from you may have to take a 15-20% restocking fee but i am convinced asrock didnt do very much testing they just took a board out of their line up and made it red and black theme for fatal1ty. little did they know the northbridge heatsink sucks/bad sensor lol

and if they "did" Quality test it at all. i feel bad for them abnd anyone that still has this board.


gigabyte northbridge temps on average dont exceed 38 degrees!
cpu is always under 35 gaming and 46ish prime95 small fft
and i dont even have the water block on the north bridge LOL

Well I didn't get a single blue screen, and I think that the thermal paste(AS5) is responsible for my CPU problem. I think that i applied it badly. I'll switch to MX-4 for immediate effects.
Unfortunately, I don't think I can return it until it breaks, because I purchased it 3 months ago.
But I like it so far. Either I got a very good CPU, or the sensors are stupid, but I managed to OC the FX to 4.2Ghz, with 1.25V!!!

My Asrock 990 Fatassity was only blue screening while I tried using the M.2 drive slot. I Had a Plextor PX-G256M6e, which is on their recommended list. Constant crashes, bluescreens, would boot up with no graphics but hit reset,and get boot with graphics. It was a wreck. While using a cheap pny ssd, it runs stable as can be. The lesson here: always buy cheap crap over high performance. OK, maybe not, but, still don't know why I must leave a 200 dollar drive laying idle on my mobo while 50 dollar one is humming away. As for the north bridge on these boards, I put a fan on it, just because I couldn't get over how hot it was. Maybe they will come out with a custom coffee cup warmer that fits on it, that would be nice. I caught the kids in here making smores over my northbridge a couple times.

you mentioned that asrock sent you a replacement. I'm curious as i think i'm going to need the same for my NB heat problem, however, i'm wondering if they will send me a board and use either collateral payment or my cc info so that i have zero downtime cuz i'm gonna be screwed if i don't. It's really important to me that i get this changed out all at once without waiting weeks for mail deliveries back and forth. Thanks in advance!

I have the "Killer" version of that board, and about a week after having it set up I decided to use the M.2 port. I used a drive that was not on the list (too new). It didn't just work out of the box. I needed to disable the external eSata (because it's using a shared channel with the M.2), Also, I could only get EFI to work (MBR gave me problems). As far as the northbridge is concerned, I ordered a copper HS / Fan before the board even came, because I knew it's reputation for heat. Also, I'm curious as to your memory load.. 1,2 or 4 sticks? I have 4 and mine gets very hot. Using a RAMdrive isn't helping either I'm sure. The heatsink replacement brought the temp waaay down, so I don't have the problem anymore. I think it has more to do with the 990 chipset than any particular board. Runs at a higher frequency that 970. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to use a flat block of aluminum as a heatsink with this chip should be fired.
