I just bought and assembled an Asrock A320 pro4, and from the manual, I figured my single 8gb ddr4 chip should go into slot A2, right...

Well, system wouldn't post at all. It occurred to me to switch the chip to slot B2, and it works, but does that mean my board is defective? Will I be able to install a second chip eventually to slot A2?

Are you able to buy or borrow a second RAM module to test?

Actually the modules should be purchased as a matched set. E.g., 2 x 8 GB.

For testing maybe try 2 x 4 GB

The following link presents and discusses RAM upgrades.

The link may help you identify some additional factor that explains the system/RAM behavior you are seeing.

(And there are other similar links to be found.)

If anything, you should be able to narrow down to the source of the problem. May indeed by motherboard but take another look at it all.

Yes, that's the correct manual (it's the same for two different motherboards). And as you can see there, a single chip should go into slot A2, but it only works in slot B2. Could be just a harmless inaccuracy (I've spotted one or two in that manual), or a symptom of something more sinister. I want to make sure my mobo is fine and I won't have problems installing a second chip to A2; because otherwise I need to return it.
