Hi!

So after a long searching and researching, I decided to finally get together all the parts I need. I decided to start with the motherboard, which I decided should be Asrock B150M PRO4 (I might also go for the H170M version, if the B150M is not in stock in my country...). The problem is the vendor messed up and sent me B150M PRO4S/D3 instead - aside from a cheaper visuals, it lacks some features I could eventually live without and it supports DDR3 and DDR3L memory. My problem is with the memory, as Skylake officially only supports DDR3L. Many sources state, that using the regular 1.5V DDR3 with skylake cpu actually stresses the cpu way to much, causes overheating and can eventually lead to cpu failure. On the other hand, I've come across couple sources, that state that as long as the mobo manufacturer states DDR3 support, the cpu won't be affected.

Seeing as the performance difference between 1600/1833 DDR3 and 2133 DDR4 is negligible, I wouldn't mind using the DDR3 (at least I could go for lower CAS!). But I'm concerned that if one day the cpu would actually die from this, the warranty would not go through, as regular DDR3 is officially not supported by intel.

So what do you think? I'm really not in the mood to argue with the vendor about replacing it, but on the other hand, if I'm building a new system on skylake, it is almost a shame to put in the last gen memory, expecially when DDR3 and 4 prices are now almost the same. Are the DDR voltage problems real or just and Intel tactic to push DDR4 sales? Should I just keep it or am I better off with RMAing it and going for the DDR4 version or even the H170m chipset? BTW, the reason I went for the B150M version is that this particular vendor had it almost 20 bucks cheaper than everyone else!

EDIT: I forgot to mention the DDR3L is actually more expensive here than DDR4. For 2x8gb Crucial DDR3L 1600 CL8, I'd have to shell out about 86 bucks, but Hyperx Fury 2133 CL14 is about 10 bucks cheaper (that's half the money I saved on the mobo).

Thanks,
Stanley

If you ordered a H170 model and they gave you something else...there is NO argument hahahaha

You get a full refund or a replacement, which they pay postage for...I don't understand...

Aside from all of this, if you are going skylake go DDR4. I won't go into deep detail but it is a no brainer. Definitely opt for H170, DDR4 and get what you paid/asked for from the vendor man!

Thanks for the answer! Yea, I know I could (and should) bug them about it, but price-wise, the board I ordered and the one I actually received cost the same (they had a discount on the better one) - so money isn't the issue here. The issue for me is the memory to use, but I guess I would be stupid not to get DDR4 when I'm building skylake based system from the scratch. Also, I'm really not looking forward to the whole RMA process...oh laziness, you'll kill me once 😀

I guess I knew the answer all along, but needed someone impartial to actually tell me to do it 😀
Thanks again!

No problem man, I know how it is. You want the parts to arrive and to build and set it all up etc.

It's really crappy when the supplier messes up. In this case it is worth saying to them you didnt get what you ordered as the whole ddr4 thing makes sense in the long term. It's essentially the new standard, much like putting an SSD in a build over a certain price etc.

Well, I should have realised by the extra low price it was probably just a database glitch on their side - funny thing is they actually removed the product from the online store and the original address now redirects to the board I received...and magically, the same price I paid appeared there too 😀 But I have the printed order info that came with the board, so I did not accidentally order a wrong board...it even clearly states DDR4!

We have couple reliable vendors here in czech republic and three best of them actually have stores right where I live, but all of them had the board for about 20 bucks more, so I ordered it from the other side of the country, which makes the RMA process a bit more complicated...next time, I'm sticking with vendors with local stores, so I can go yell at them in person 😀.
