Heyo, I haven't posted on Tom's Hardware in ages, but I've come to a standstill with my Z87 KIller from ASRock. Just the other day it was working perfectly but yesterday, almost 1 hour after it was working perfectly, it wouldn't boot. There were a few things I found out and tried to solve the problem but to no avail.
Here's what I have noticed:

  • The motherboard chipset becomes very hot after just a few minutes of it receiving power, I really have know idea why.
There is a small but noticeable spark that appears when I turn the power supply on (HCG-900 from Antec) underneath the PCB where a coil thing (idk what it is lol) and I can hear some coil whine after a few seconds of it being turned on.
Also the LEDs on my keyboard (CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid Red) are solid when the system is getting power.

So now, this is what I have tried to do to resolve this myself:

  • Shorted the 24 pin connector from the PSU to check if it was to blame, the fan spun up so it is not the culprit.
I unplugged absolutely everything that was unnecessary, so all USB devices and the HDDs and ethernet cable. Still it didn't want to boot.
I tried putting various amount of fans in just to see if that had even a slight effect on the system boot, still nothing.
I changed the RAM (Corsair Vengeance LP 2x4GB 1600MHz) module placement but again to no avail.
I changed the place where the power connector is and I even tried using an extension.

So after a long two days I still have not solved this problem, LTT has been of no help whatsoever so I was praying that I could get some people that could shed some light on my situation here.

This is what my current gaming PC build consists of: ASRock Fatal1ty Z87 Killer, Intel Core i5 4670K with just the stock cooler, 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance RAM @ 1600MHz/CL9, Seagate Barracuda 1TB (believed to be corrupted atm) and a HCG-900 from Antec. I'm using the top anel of my Aerocool Strike-X Advanced so I can turn it on (it's not in the case itself).
So yeh, I'd really appreciate it if one or more of you guys/gals could suggest things for me to do to diagnose the problem further or steps to try and resolve the issue. Soz for the uber long post, I just really wanted to explain everything that I've tried and noted.
Cheers!

Solution
Sounds like your motherboard is shorting to ground. Probably at or near a standoff. Remove it and check it for signs - by sight and nose.

If its just a standoff shorted the mobo might be OK. But if its shorted through a component then you probably have a faulty motherboard and need to replace it.

Solution

Well I've got my standoffs in place all with those standard washers and it's on the box it came with, I'll try removing them all and seeing if it helps, I really hope I don't have to RMA it.
Also, already in 6 minutes I got more posts than a whole day from LTT, >.> wow. Thanks for the advice though :)

Edit:
Nope, doesn't want to boot, so pissed atm.

dont u have other parts to replace? maybe try old or new motherboard, other psu.
And howlong you got that pc running? did you did overclocking or set something else in bios? socket damaged ? lid not closing perfectly ? the spark in the psu, i think i have it also, but everything goes perfecty. maybe a coil on the motherboard is burned. try swap motherboard, if you have one,

The problem is with the motherboard, if I switch out the motherboard than I wouldn't be able to solve the problem.

Thanks, I'll try booting like that, hopefully I can narrow it down to a simple shorting.

Well I'd like t not replace the motherboard, but I really do think that's what is going to have to happen. Anyways, I'll try booting with only the CPU fan and power connected, and ofc the on/off connector to actually turn it on.

Ok so I fairly tried booting it without anything other than the CPU fan and power and the on/off cable. And.... it didn't work, so I'm fairly going to get in touch with ASRock and see if I can get a replacement or a refund.
Thanks for all the help though guys, I really appreciate it.

i hope you get a new motherboard, Its maybe a bad capicitor or coil,
maybe you should bring your motherboard to a repair store? they can see where is or was the problem.I would like to hear when everything is running again.
Good luck,,

Well I just sent a Support Request Form to ASRock detailing the situation just before. I was out camping for the week an I only got home yesterday so that's why I hadn't gotten back to you beforehand.

did you allready recieved answer from asrock ?
