Hi,

I have the following problem with my Asrock H61M-VG3.

I bought it 2 months ago. When I first installed my MOBO and the others components, I noticed the second RAM slot (b) was not working (system reboot with black screen), at that moment I had only one 4gb DDR3 RAM, I changed it to the first (a) memory slot and it worked well, I thought it was made to work that way with only one stick of ram.

I bought a second 4gb DDR3 RAM hours ago, exactly the same as the other one so I'd enjoy the MOBO's dual channel, but at the moment I installed it to the b memory slot, the system wont boot up.

My first thought was that the RAM was faulty, so I changed the recently bought RAM to the first slot, removing my actual RAM from the computer. It worked well. So the RAM is not damaged.

I started investigating about this issue, and i've tried the following so far:

  • ■ Increased DRAM voltage to 1.6, it was at 1.5 by default.
    ■ Checked nearby screws on the MOBO, loosen them a bit.
    ■ Test the MOBO outside the case.
    ■ Test the MOBO, while outside the case, without the CPU fan/heatsing installed but connected.
    ■ Test the MOBO without graphic card
    ■ Reset CMOS
    ■ Checked BIOS version (it's the last one, 1.90)
    ■ Looked for bios configuration on RAM, but I did not find anything related to my problem
    ■ Test the MOBO without anything connected (still reboot itself)
    ■ Hit the wall in rage (did not solve the problem either)

I'll provide every other info needed.

Any clues of what is wrong? Is there any configuration in BIOS i'm missing? Is my b ram slot dead?

I appreciate every one of your responses.

My system specs:

MOBO: Asrock H61M-VG3
RAM: ADATA 4GB DDR3 1333mhz PC3-10700 (both of them)
Video Card: Geforce 9800 GT 1GB PCI-E
CPU: Intel Core i3 3220, Ivy Bridge, socket 1155, 3.30 ghz
HDD: 2 of them
SSD: No
PSU: 600w non certified generic power supply.

I'm from Venezuela, economy is a problem here so I'd be relieved if someone could have any clues about this, buying other MOBO like that one is about 2 months of work for any common person here.

If you have exactly two sticks of the same ram and they work when in the first slot(closest to the motherboard) but not when in dual channel mode then the issue is with your board's memory channels. It's best if you can RMA the board. If the replacement board does the same thing again, you may want to question the people at your computer store if they actually changed the board. You may want to take the serial number of your board to verify that they gave you a different board.

I would also ask you to get a branded/reliable PSU since a bad PSU can and will take out more than your investments. They have been known to put houses on fire.
