Hi everyone, i'm planning to upgrade my cpu to an i5 4690k. Mainly for overclocking. However, a lot of you had said that "H" motherboards are not meant for overclocking. And even if overclocking is possible, you can't squeeze a lot of juice out of it due to voltage regulations. Is it actually the case? I'm not spending another $100 on a Z motherboard!
If I need to spend that money I'd rather get an amd fx 8300 and an asrock 970 extereme 3.
What's your take on it?
Thanks!

Like other member said, save more to upgrade. No go back to fx 8 series. For now you have to close/shut down some of the programs and services running in the background. If like you said a heavy multitasker while playing Witcher 3 you will need the i7, or the Xeon, not the i5 or fx 8 series cpu.
For the game Witcher 3, here is the review, your i5 should be between the i5 4690K and i5 3470. http://www.techspot.com/review/1006-the-witcher-3-benchmarks/page5.html Also you can see even you oc the cpu don't make the big differences for that games. They did oc the i7. http://www.techspot.com/review/1006-the-witcher-3-benchmarks/page5.html
you need a z97 board to overclock properly. you can still get a solid overclock without spending another $100. if you're looking at the anniversary h97, look at the anniversary z97 from asrock. it is normally almost the same price and will overclock the 4690k pretty well. not as well as the highest end boards but decent enough for a budget.

here are a handful of asrock oc boards to compare with to the h97 anniversary http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/compare/asrock-motherboard-fatal1tyz97killer,asrock-motherboard-h97manniversary,asrock-motherboard-z97anniversary,asrock-motherboard-z97pro4/

1) What is the CPU you used now? If you have the intel cpu, don't recommend go back to the amd fx 8300.
2) Yes, the H97 is not designed to oc, but you can use the asrock's Non-Z OC feature to oc the k-version cpu. Here is the review ( for other model) http://www.pcgameware.co.uk/reviews/motherboards/asrock-fatal1ty-h97-performance-motherboard-review/
3) Keep in mind you have to use the old version BIOS, because intel added the microcode to lock the oc in the non-Z MB. Check it out this http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2478570/asrock-h97m-pro4-overclock.html

going back to an fx cpu is a big downgrade!!

stick with teh 4460 before you drop back to a fx cpu. an 8300 and an 8350 are the same chip but with different clock speed. it is on par with an i3 performancewise. would you consider a move from an i5 to an i3 an upgrade? me either :)

Thanks for the reply. I'll look into it. This is over my budget by a lot!

i don't think you have the budget to get into overclocking yet. truthfully you won't see much improvement over the 4460 you already have. i'd save up for a true upgrade and move to skylake and ddr4 later in the year as a true upgrade. even then cpu performance gains are only 15% or so over you're current i5!!

the 4690k is a lot of cash for a cpu that is already out dated considering you'll also need a new mobo to go with it as well as better cooling to handle the oc.

I saw some benchmarks online saying that there are certainly some difference (considering the price) but it's not a lot. And the 8350 can be overclocked, thus reducing the difference.
I dunno... but I checked. I can't afford a Z motherboard. It's way too expensive.

My budget is around $300 for everything. A $50 cooler, an i5 (or fx+motherboard). Is it not enough? If not, how much is?
I was hoping the fx to be on par with the 4670k or at least a 4460. But I can overclock it to bridge the gap. But is it not the case? Do you have like an article comparing their differences? I'm more into modern games BTW. And I am a heavy multitasker.while playing Witcher 3 I noticed that I have billions of windows on my taskbar.
