Hey guys,

I have a quick question with regards to ASRock H97M Pro4. I'm wondering if this board is capable of overclocking an Intel i5-4690k.

I've done some googling but couldn't find a definitive answer so any and all help is appreciated.

Solution
For guaranteed overclocking of the i5-4690K CPU you will want a Z97 chipset motherboard. Some other chipsets may be able to use a "beta" BIOS to enable some overclocking support, but it's not recommended.

You should rather go for my CPU. Won't need to OC, and even if you were, it would only give 5-10%, Xeon already has hyperthreading which pretty much doubles CPU power on supported application, and there will be a lot more of them coming in the future.

Well I have yet to purchase either but when I do I'm going to go with a Z97 board.

Most likely the GIGABYTE GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5.

Thanks for the input though guys.

The answer is actually yes, you can now. I have the H97M Pro4 and an i7 4790K, overclocked to 4.5 GHz and it's working just fine using Non-Z OC in the Bios. Running about 5-10C hotter under heavy load, but I have a great Cooler Master heatsink so it's all good. The new Asrock bios also has plenty of temperature safety settings, temperature-fan speed targets, auto-shut down and voltage safety settings. Looking back, I prolly should have got the Z97 for an extra $15 but it's working just fine for me!

Other Specs: gtx 970
3 separate TB HDDs and one 120GB SSD
16 GB Crucial Ballistix RAM
6 Fans total
EVGA 1000W psu

You dont know anything about OC:

I have this board with 4790K running at 4.8GHZ smooth....1.230v/1.050v Core/Cache

Dont give any advice if you really dont know what you are talking about please.

As of V2.0 (latest BIOS) the OC support has been disabled, so beware & be warned.

ASRock support answer:

Dear customer,
Thank you for contacting ASRock.

According to Intel H97 chipset's specification, it doesn't support overclock on H series chipset.
And Intel already lock the OC ability on H series platform in new Microcode according to Intel’s spec, system won’t support overclock CPU after updating the BIOS P2.00 with new Intel Microcode.
If you would like to do OC on H97M Pro4, we would suggest customer to flash back the older BIOS P1.90 or earlier version with old Microcode.

Thanks

Best Wishes
