This would be so excellent of a starter for someone to fab themselves a 3d printed laptop case and go from there.

We really need full from-the-ground-up laptops that we can build ourselves. (Not a "barebones")

Long live Thin mini-ITX! Sadly, it's the closest the DIY community ever got to being able to build your own NUC. I really wish the mini-STX form factor had taken off.

My favorite Thin mini-ITX case is the Silverstone PT13, based primarily on aesthetics (it has some negatives, once you get to the practical side of things):

Laptops with interchangeable motherboards would already be a huge step forward.

What I think we need is more mITX mobos, and very small cases for them (not cubes, but tiny towers). This one looks perfect for building your own media center, PC console or even work machine, but the lack of small cases and adequate PSUs make it a dificult choice.

The weird part about that one is how it has two different lids, depending on how much room you need.

As for small PSUs, the two options supported by these tiny cases both involve external power bricks. Some boards (like the one in the article) have a DC input on the rear panel, while others can be used with a PicoPSU:

If you go that route, make sure the case has a spot for you to mount the DC input jack.

It would have to be a low power one because of the way the board is powered. Likely not a big gain over a good AM5 APU. You could also rig together a whole separate PSU but that defeats the purpose of having a thin ITX.

I think the 8700G is a great fit for a thin case since it idles low, but if you wanted a bit bigger fan you could go with a 50X and still have good display capabilities. You can fit a PT13 almost anywhere.

I would definitely like to see more of this type of thing come from the bigger manufacturers who have things like proper warranties and return policies. I would be a bit leery about the potential for the board to flex as ASRock has had some issues in the past with their smaller boards with fewer layers.

IMO if worried about flex the Chopin Max is a more substantial option than the B1 at almost the same price - got a B650E-I with a 7600 in mine. Can fit the included cooler but there are other options; I wanted to push it a bit so got the NH-L9a-AM5 with a duct kit and then stuck this iPPC 2000 on it.

Not the quietest solution at full tilt, but it can hit 5GHz all-core, or a little less when the iGPU is loaded too (got to undervolt both CPU and GPU cores or it pushes CPU freq down to maintain GPU ~70°C).

Nice. I'm not a fan of the bulging mesh square, FWIW. I'd rather they just extend the whole case and make it flush.

Yeah, I get that. I think honestly they just wanted to mess with the tooling as little as possible. It's also sold, or was, as a monitor-back-mounted system for business (though you might need a sturdy stand), so maybe there's some dimensional limits there.

This is vaporware!!. Contacted Asrock and they said they have no pland to sell this in any place other than Mainland China. Interesting since the boards are made in Taiwan. Two listings for the boards on Taobao and I attempted to purchase using a Buyer and the Taobao Sellers reused to sell even though they listed 200 units in stock. These will be put into Chinese AIO's and mini pc's not for US or European market!!!

I think that sort of practice isn't uncommon.

It's not uncommon to see such hardware appear on AliExpress or even US-based platforms like ebay, amazon, and newegg, with sellers willing to ship to buyers in the US and elsewhere. If you're patient, you might yet find it on one of those platforms.

Taobao listings now down to one.
I attempted a purchase from this seller and from another which has disappeared, both said they had no boards in stock, Used "Parcelup" of which I have an account, primarily because they display Taobao results in English and you can view photo sections of Taobao listings.

Someone else who spoke to me through another forum had contacted Asrock through the industrial supply distribution and they said it would require an order of over 100 units minimum.
