Question Asrock X670E RS PRO nightmare ?

Hi guys, you can call me Hentai. I am an Australian-Chinese who live in Melbourne Australia. Recently, I had some really rared problem, together with Australia local warranty, plus some other parts went down, finally everything become a total nightmare. 🤣 Now the problem gets temporarily fixed, yet soon I still need to spend some more time to fix it.😱

On April 2023, I bought almost a whole system from a local computer store named Scorptech. Here is the list:
CPU: AMD R7 7700X
COOLER: Be Quite true loop 240mm
RAM: corsair vengeance ddr5-6000 cl30
MB: Asrock X670E RS PRO
SSD: KINGSTON KC3000
PSU: TT GF3 1000W
I also bought a MSI 3080ti Gaming trio from one of my tenants, he is somehow rich, he bought a 4090 so he sold his 3080ti to me with a very good price, just 800 Aud😉

At the very beginning, everything is fine, except the on board 2.5GBE LAN, at the start, it just does not work at all. I have diabled the LAN on BIOS, and restart it, it back to work, yet only work at 100M. Later I removed the usb devices (my key board and mouse) that are pluged next to the Lan port and pluged them to usb2.0 ports that are on the above because to test the 2.5gbe LAN, I need to plug and unplug the ethernet cable all the time and those things are in the way. All in a sudden,the problem is gone. 😵Before that, no matter what I have done, including update the BIOS, the problem stays there. 🤣 I have no idea how can this happen even though I managed to fix it.

Anyway, this is just something very small comparing what I faced after. On July, I bought a PNY XRL8 4090. After that I went back to China and I don't even have the time to test it. I also brought my old 3080ti back and used it to build a dual AIO system for my father ( https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/【caution】be-careful-about-dual-radiator-build.3821364/ ).

When I back from China, it is the beginning of my nightmare. The PNY 4090 does not work at all!😱 On the very 1st place, I thought it must be the graphic card's problem. So I brought it back to where I bought it from (Centrecom, another local computer store), they test the grahic card, everything is fine. I did not 100% trust them so I tried it again on my tenant's computer, it was fine. Thus, I start to check my computer, 1st step, I tried 2 different graphic card, one is NV Quadro K600, works fine, I thought it could be the PSU's problem, so I used my old champ, GTX980TI, connect its 2x8pin from 2 different cable, works fine. However, no matter what I have tried, including changing graphic card power cable from 12vhpwr to 4X8PIN adpoter, update to lastest bios, it just did not work. Nevertheless, I was able to get in windows with IGPU, and it works fine, so I went to device management to check, I found that Windows was not even able to find the 4090!😳 2ed step,

I went back to the BIOS, try to work it out. I turned the setting to "Prefer external GPU", did not work. Untill the time that I changed PCI-E 16X speed to GEN3 or lower, the PNY XRL8 4090 started to give grahic. Yet it only worked before you get into windows, you can stay in BIOS as long as you want, change all the setting, there was no problem at all. However, once windows start loading, the screen just freezed. Even tried to reinstall the windows, it worked at the very beginning, yet when the windows 10 starts 2ed time, guess what? Freezed again. 🤣

Thus, till that moment, I have realized that either the MB or the CPU (PCI-E 16X controller sits inside the cpu) went wrong. I went back to Sorptech with the whole set, told them what happened, the staff said he will test it. Just a few seconds later he told me my PSU is dead. 🤣 He replaced the PSU, since the PSU is also bought from there and it is still under warranty and told me everything is fine. Never the **** [Moderator edit to remove poorly masked profanity.] less, at that time, the graphic card that pluged into the MB is my old GTX980TI🤣 I thought the problem is totally fixed, so after I brought it back I even spent 2 hours to move everything inside the case to a new case (before I was using Fractal desgin Focus G, this is not good enough for my current build, so I bought a Fractal Desgin pop air Xl). When I plugged in the 4090, well, the problem was still the same. 😱

Finally, I brought my computer back again, told them the situation, and ask them to do one thing but one thing only, put another CPU onto the MB to see if the problem happens again or not. If it does, then it is the MB's problem, which I am almost 90% sure, if the problem is gone, then it is the CPU's problem, I want to return the CPU and change to 7900 without X. They charged me 99 aud to do the test. After a few days, they called me, told me that it is MB's problem.,the MB needs to be RMA.

They told me that they tried to do everything that they could thought, including change downgrade the bios, try another SSD, it just did not work. So that they are sure that it is MB's problem. Yet RMA takes 2 to 4 weeks, so I have to buy another MB if I want to use the computer. If RMA can be done within 2 weeks then I can bring the new MB back, they will only charge me 15% of the board. Eventually, I chosed another Asrock MB, which is ASRock - B650M PG Riptide WiFi. To make sure that there is no further drama, I borrowed the tools from the staff there and put everything together infront of them. It works without any problem. 🙁

Now it is already 4 days after, there is no updates for RMA, I hope everything can be fixed within 14 days...If it is not, there will be nothing but a total nightmare for me. 🙄

So the remaining problem is that you are just waiting for the RMA process to complete - correct?

Yes, however I am not really sure 1) If they can finish everything within 14 days, cuz, if they don't I have to give my current MB back otherwise I have to buy the MB I am using now. 2) If RMA can fix the problem.

Sorry for grave digging, yet there are some update, that can drive both the read of this post and myself creazy.

After total 28 days, RMA finished, I did get the M.B. Yet the problem is still there. I asked the staff of Scorptech what is going on, then they checked out the feed back, found that even asrock repair centre can not find out the problem because they told us that they could not reproduce the problem. Thus, at the end, I have been given 85% of the original price of my ASRock X670E RS PRO refund, because they don't have any more stock avaliable at the time and the ETA is so long that beyond what I can wait.

Finally I have chosen the Asrock X670E Taichi, cuz its ETA is on 1st of Nov. Yet when that day came, they told me that it is delayed and there is no ETA for this MB. In fact this MB is not arrive till now. I just can not wait any more, so I have once again reviewed my requirements : A. a X670E MB, it must be X670E B. Has at least 6 SATA. Then I found out there are only 2 M.B. avaliable in whole Australia, okay in fact 3 but the 3rd one is MSI god like, this is out of question due to its high inflated price. One is MSI carbon X670E another is ROG X670E Hero. However, I found that MSI Carbon does not have USB4, so finally I get a ROG X670E for 1099 aud.

After all this drama, I did some math myself, let's say, if the ROGX670E Hero can last 8 me years, every year it is going to cost me 137 aud something. Meanwhile, if I chose those some "normal" ones, usually can not go over 400 aud and they need to be replaced in 4 years time, which works out, every year is going to cost me 100 aud. Not mention that I have to pay 1099 in one short, while using "normal" ones I just need to pay 400 aud something at one time, which means that I there is an interest lose.

So, yeah, at the end of the day, I was forced to make such poor choice.
