Hi all,
Cpu- i7 6700k
Mobo - Asrock z170 k6
Ram - crucial ballistix sport 4gb ddr4 2400mhz
Cooler- cooler master hyper 212 evo
Psu - evga supernova 750w
Storage - Samsung 850 Evo Series
Chassis- Phanteks enthloo pro (stock fans)

Feel like I have a dead board here. All components brand new although I cant afford a gpu yet (looking at gtx 1070) and plan to grab a stack of terrabyte in hdds, hence the excessive wattage on the psu.

Put everything together and got a successful post to tell me to set the boot disk
. Naturally i powered off and grabbed a burger with a friend and talked up the unfinished monster (i refuse to believe this could have caused my litany of problems!).
I get home and the rig wont post. Debug code reads 00 (cpu failed to initialise) so i become triggered. I noticed no fans are moving, and there is no beep pre post beep.
So, I slowly go through following steps in this order -
1. Checked the cpu power connector is flush, it is but no luck, repeat with 24 pin still no change
2. Checked psu connections, all good, but no post
3. Check cpu fan is connected. Nothing.
4. Recheck all connections methodically. All ok, nada.
5. Removed ram, tried different ram configurations according to manual. No joy
7. Removed cooler, removed cpu. No pins bent or broken, thermal paste looks even enough if perhaps a wee bit too much for my liking, but nothing over the top, no spillage.
Reseated everything perfectly for what I felt was the second time today, and cleared the CMOS via the switch on iso shield. I did this out of the case, on cardboard,
The psu was unplugged and switched off at the time. Tried to power on and same reaction, no fans, no post.
Nothing.
8. Began swearing.
9. Repeated entirebuild and also cleared cmos via jumpers on the actual mobo, and tried to switch to onboard backup bios. Entirely no joy. Or change.

Thoughts -
Phanteks fan controller may be acting up? And thats why i get no fans at all? Maybe its all the case and the cpus fault? I think not tho.

I felt the h212 cooler was a bit of a nightmare to install, but i didnt feel I used too much force, heard no suspicious sounds, it was a pain but it was steady going.

Was my psu too much? Did I fry everything? Please tell me not so..

Tried with just one 4 pin cpu connector for shizzles and giggles. Nothing either.

Any suggestions? My friends are peasents, dont know anyone with a z170 mobo so I cant check the cpu is actually ok. I will end up RMAing both to be sure. Thanks for any suggestions as I would love to at least post to bios and diagnose the cpu if thats even possible.
Thanks all for your help!

So it did post when you build it; and when you come back later, it would not. Sounds like something (cat? dog? kid? something else?) had some kind of interaction with your monster while you were away. Looks like you really have no other choice but RMA both.

Have no kids/pets. The pc was supposed to be my child! Ok now its a bit strange but you know that parenty love you have for any rig you build.
I left it plugged in but off. Could a power surge from the mains have shorted it? I would have thought Modern components were choc a bloc with surge protection

I know that feeling :)

If it was off, power surge could not damage mobo (usually). But it could damage PSU. Have you checked if PSU is still operational?

Psu is operational as mobo gets power on the debug light and I hear the fan of the psu whirring when trying to boot. ( Thats enough right? I know there are far more in depth tests but i am going to hunch on it).

I am getting a replacement board from Amazon, they have been pretty sound about the RMA and theoretically it will arrive in a day or 2.
I am hoping that the cpu will like this board better, but do you think if the cpu shorted it is totally dead? There is no sign of fried badness on either side, but theres a damn good chance the mobo shorted and sent excess voltage to the cpu (although the board has built in defenses for surges).
Will update, sacrifice something to the gods for my good fortune.

Well, just waiting on the motherboard to test.
When will Amazon get my motherboard to me?
"When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east," said Mirri Maz Duur, Amazon customer service representative. "When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then he will return, and not before."

In other words, ill know in three days or so.
