ASROCK z68 Extreme 4 DR Debug Code 45

Hi, I'm having a problem with my new motherboard. I'm getting DR Debug code 45 when entering in RAM into the memory slots closest to the CPU, the two outer slots work fine with each stick or ram, and I could put both in the two outer slots and it'll work. Any of them in the inner two, and I get the debug code and the system doesn't POST.

Is this a motherboard problem, a CPU problem or something else and is there any way to fix it other than sending back for a replacement?


It works perfectly with only one stick or both sticks in the two outer slots, and I'm able to boot successfully and have windows installed and am running it fine. I just can't use RAM in dual channel with the inner two not working
 
I have the Z68 Fatal1ty board. I'm looking at a picture of your board on Newegg website. They don't appear to have color-coded the RAM slots on that board for some reason. So, call the RAM slot nearest the CPU, Slot 1, the next slot to its right Slot 2, the next slot to the right, Slot 3, and the slot furthest from the CPU Slot 4.

What do you get when you put a RAM in slot 1, and a RAM in slot 3?

What RAM are you using?
 
It can be installed in either slots 1 & 3 or 2 & 4 but 1 & 3 are recommended. Read your manual... there's a paragraph followed by a nice table in there (on or around page 16). If it still doesn't work then let us know.
 
If I put RAM in slot 1 and slot 3, I get code 45, if I put it in slot 1 by itself, it's code 45. Likewise for 2 & 4, and 2 by itself. It only works when I put the RAM in slot 3 or slot 4 or both together.

RAM I'm using is 8GB-Kit G.Skill RipJaws-X PC3-10667U CL9.

I do not see the RAM you are using on that list.

I have Fatal1ty z68 and have 2X G. Skill Ripjaws X: F3-10666CL9D-8GBXL

for a total of 16GB and it has worked smooth from day one.
 



Yours is the same RAM I have then, G.Skill Ripjaws-X F3-10666CL9D-8GBXL is the exact name for what I got. I got 2 x 4 GB
 


What you posted was different. At any rate, if the RAM you are using is on the compatibility list, and you are using the latest BIOS, I would go ahead and RMA the board while you're within 30 days.

Looks like new board fixed his problem. If you're sure the RAM is seated properly, and the RAM is good, then I would RMA the board for a new one. And with each stick of RAM working in 1 slot, that would seem to verify the RAM is not the problem.

Probably shouldn't matter, but are you using the latest BIOS version? If not, I would update BIOS and try again. If that doesn't change anything, I would RMA the board if you're within 30 days (and you bought from Newegg). After that I think your're stuck with warranty claim. RMA probably easier.
 
Before you RMA, try reseating your CPU. Shut off, unplug, remove CPU and put it back in. Seems this solves the problem for many, and may be why the RMA seems to solve the problem, because that forces people to remove the CPU and reseat it, albeit in a new board. But the new board may be unnecessary. Found that idea here:

Ya, I've RMAd it, hoping it's the motherboard and not the CPU that's the problem. I tried reseating the CPU but it didnt help, seems to be in correctly and is locked down in the socket.
 
Found a fix! (at least for me!)

First time builder here, had same problem!

RAM in slot 1 or 2 would NOT boot. Had DR. DEBUG code 45

Ram in either 3 or 4 or both would get a boot.

The RAM I bought IS on the support list for the motherboard.

As described above though that's only single channel and was thinking Motherboard problem especially after reading this post.

I noticed in the BIOS that voltage was in auto for RAM and set at 1.1V so I boosted to 1.5V and it read the RAM in slot one!!!

I set BIOS back to default again (1.1V again) no boot using RAM in slot 1 or 2.

Boosted again to 1.5V in the BIOS and BAM works like a charm! Full Boot and Duel Channel (RAM in Slot 1 and 3 as required)

I really hope this helps everyone I'm building this computer with my 10 year old for his b-day was very upset we might had to RMA! Was bouncing off the walls when we figured it out!

Update..

Problem error code 45 is back. seems that the act of taking memory out of slot nearest the cpu and putting it back in fixes it. currently the system boots with the other 3 slots populated..

Haven't found a conclusive solution for this yet either?

Any help or suggestions appriciated.
 
That is strange. That 'voltage fix' you referred to is not really a fix but what you should do in the first place, but I can understand why inexperienced builders could overlook this (I agree it should be automatically detected and set but unfortunately its not).

What memory are you using? Double check the memory is compatible with the mobo and double check the BIOS settings (both for voltage and timings) match the specifications of your memory.
 



The memory I'm using is - Corsair CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9 16GB 1600MHz CL9 DDR3 Vengeance Memory Four Module Kit. It's not on the list as far as I can see but other Corsair mem is. All was fine for more than a month, then BAM! Code 45! It's a new build.

Now I did a test today, I put one stick of ram in the first slot and got code 45, tried the other 3 sticks one at a time in slot one and they all booted, then I tried the first stick again just to be sure and it booted? finally I put all sticks back in and it booted... I'm being very careful and sure that the ram is always seated properly, I just know that next time I go to switch it on after being off for a while it'll kick up code 45.

I'll do a full mem test on the memory next. What I don't understand is why
it has all of a sudden started to appear, could it mean a fault somewhere
that is gradually going to get worse and cause damage elsewhere?

It seems people are RMA'ing this board because of this but I really don't
want to have to do this unless it's absolutely certain it is the board..

Thanks. Re-seating the cpu fixed the 45 error code and dual channel memory problem in my Asrock P67 Extreme6 motherboard.
 
The fact that the memory is not on the validated list would concern me but given that it worked for over a month its obviously not a compatibility problem. I would try to test that first stick (which didn't boot) again a few more times, rule out the possibility of faulty memory. Otherwise if you are sure the RAM is seated correctly that is very strange, basically you need to determine if its a memory issue or a mobo issue before you RMA either.

Did you try reseating the CPU as mentioned above?
 



No not yet, saving that one. Did mem test and all tests passed. I discovered that if I turn the main switch on the psu it would get around this code 45 thing too. I put bios setting back to default making just the necessary
changes and things seem to have settled down now.. if it starts complaining again I'll re-seat and examine the cup slot..

Im getting code 45 too so bummed, but its very wierd how it happened. first time builder, got everything set up and installed perfectly. went to install windows 7 on my hard drive, it tells me to upgrade. it wouldnt give me the option of an initial install...i cant imagine why it was a brand new drive. it tells me to reboot to upgrade and i go along with it and as it powers down...blue screen of death. didnt get a chance to see codes or anything. im SO bummed cuz the whole time i was terrified of breaking something or frying something. by some miracle i got all the hardware part right and then of course microsofts garbage product destroys my machine. its giving me code 45 too and pushing the power button wont turn off the motherboard i have to switch off the power supply. the worst part is now my video doesnt work so i cant get into BIOS or anything. im totally dead in the water. i dont get ot though if 45 is a RAM issue why is it that my video wont come up? doesnt make sense.
 
OK apparently taking out the cpu and replacing it was a horrific idea for me. now it goes through a series of numbers and ends at 45. the ones i see are 10 15 19 46 59 45 pretty much in that order. i got a terrible feeling my cpu got zapped. thanks microsoft for the $1000 glitch. the mac disciples are really gonna give me a heckling tomorrow.

for whats its worth i got the extended warranty on the mobo processor and vid card. not sure if screwing up the processor during a reinstallation is covered though. so frustrating cuz i was right there but i have a feeling reinstalling the processor made the whole project dead. trying to stay positive via the live and learn thing but its hard not to be furious when u build for the first time, get all that crazy stuff put together, and then a windows installation derails everything. is there any way to tell if its the processor, mobo, or both? i took the processor back out and noticed that on the underside 3 of the little nubs were a bit greyish...as if a little bit of the gold was rubbed off when i reinstalled it.

the mobo manual sort of has a list of codes but most of em have letters and i dont see 45,59 etc under the dr debug section. thinking of taking the whole mess to a local comp repair place so they can tell me what i need to replace. im guessing the processor and video card are done (since there was no display after the blue screen during windows install). hopefully the mobo is ok since everything is mostly hooked up. then all id have to do is slap in the processor and eedo the paste/heatsink and i would be back up and running...at least until i went to install windows again LOL.
 
I know I'm 1 or 2 years late but I want to share my experience and maybe get some help from you guys.

I had the same issue for about a year now.

At first, I built my computer with this hardware:
ASRock extreme4 gen3 MoBo
intel i7-2600k
4x4 Gb corsair vengeance (1600MHz)
the rest is not important.

Everything worked fine for the first 6 months. One morning I wake up and there is this dr debug 45 code preventing me from booting (can't access bios either to change settings). After several tests, it comes down to the conclusion that memory slots 3 and 4 (the farthests from the CPU) will not work in any combination of memory (even with 1 stick alone in 3 or 4 it won't boot).

First steps to solve the problem (all of these did not work)
1. Reseat everything (including CPU, RAM and the power)
2. change the voltages in bios
3. flash bios to latest version
4. check on compatibility list -- my RAM is not there.
5. Whatever, RMA the mobo : Did not fix anything.

So I let go for about a year. problem not solved. Sad to think I have a computer that expensive that cannot do what it is intended to!

3 weeks ago I decided to check and see if there were any new solutions to this problem (some people with P67 seem to be having the same issue). I decided to change the RAM. I had a deal on Ripjaws X 2x 8gb 2133MHz -- bought them after finding references of people having them on this motherboard and it works. It is not on the list either, but it was told to be working. It is also on the good list of G.Skill

After installation complete, still the same problem: slots 1 and 2 will work, 3 and 4 not at all. I decided to go in bios and test every single setting I could change:
All latency set to 9-11-11-31-2N as the box says (ram)


Tried to change the following settings one at a time:
1. set MRC to off
2. set no-execute memory protection to disable
3. playing with voltages again: tried from 1,605V to 1,650V

Seems to me there is not much more I can do.

So. I RMA'd the motherboard, changed the RAM sticks.. it narrows down to two possible solutions:
1. this motherboard sucks
2. The CPU is "fried" but still works (the memory controller could be malfunctioning)

I'm not that eager to spend another 300$ on a new CPU just to test and see it not work better than the old. Is there anything else anyone can think of that I didn't do? I just want to get dual-channel speed -- not talking of any overclocking here, just getting it to work as it should!

Is there any test I could do on the CPU to see if it's the problem? (other that changing it for another one, I don't have spare cpu's to try!)
