Is this going to work out is my question. It looks like it won't be able to fit in slot 1. Will the stick of memory work in another slot as to fit beneath my cpu cooler?

The stick of memory was free with a certain purchase.

This will be my first time building a pc.

Solution
You need TWO IDENTICAL sticks of RAM in a motherboard for the best performance. As the guy above said, get another identical stick and put them in the two slots that your motherboard says will work that aren't in the way of the CPU HSF.

*You can easily find the measurement of how high the RAM is and the CPU HSF clearance.

If you're still there... YES.

You motherboard manual gives this information. You MUST use the proper slot or slots for one or two-stick configurations.
