Hey,

I just installed an Asrock z77 extreme4 motherboard in my PC and i'm having a few weird issues.

Hard Drive detection:
I currently have 4 sata hard drives and a sata DVD drive plugged into the board. Only 2 of these are detected at any given time and it's always the first 2 SATA ports on the board. So, whatever I put into those 2 ports will work and the others won't be detected.

I've tried installing the ASmedia and intel sata drivers, in different orders and one instead of the other, and I managed to get it to detect all of the drives once when uninstall the Asmedia driver and installing the intel one...but after a restart they disappeared again.

Startup power issue:
When I first installed the board it would turn on and off normally. Now i'm having an issue where i'll have to try 10-20 times to get the board to power up using the on-board power button or the case power button. I've taken the board out of the case and still have the same issue....I've tried 2 different power supplies that i've tested with other PC's but it didn't change anything.

So, yeah i'm at a loss, i've never experienced this before with any computer i've built in the past. Should I just get a new board? And if so, what z77 board would you recommend?

Thanks

Solution
Hard Drives:
It sounds like the SATA ports on the motherboard are likely dead. Either that or the SATA cables you are using, but chances are its the SATA ports have up and died. All drives should be detected even without drivers, especially in the BIOS. When they picked up that one time, it was probably just a fluke, likely won't happen again.

Power Issue:
This points to the possibility that the full chipset is dying. Chances are the board is trash unless you can return it under warranty.

yes sorry to say but it would seem you have a bad motherboard. Or the 2 power supply's you have are not enough to power the system with all the new parts. but cant tell that for sure with out your system specs. Did you try to boot with the bare min with those 2 power supply's if it works then its possible you need more wats

Looks like you might be right about it being a dud.

I've taken out the video cards so i'm only running the board, cpu, ram, and drives. The power supplies were both 800+ watts.

Yea man rma it or send it back if possible. I know the feel's bro im still waiting on asus to rma my board =(. I just hope they dont try to charge me for "Customer induced damage" Like I hear so much on the web about. Its been in being repaired status going on 3 days now lol.

Hopefully they will answer you. I had a little trouble with an ASrock board and they never would answer me so I refuse to buy from them again. Oddly enough, though I am currently using an Asus board, I am a big advocate for Biostar. I first really didn't like them, but they actually answer their technical support emails and are helpful, and tend to be pretty solid.

Hopefully you can get it returned.
