I'm thinking of upgrading my computer, and will be going from an i5-4670K, to an i7-4790K, and upgrading my 980 OC to an RTX 2080 ti. However, I'm being told that my motherboard will need a BIOS update. I've been told different things, but, how do I do this efficiently and without hopefully hurting my computer? My secondary question is if an i7-4790K is sufficient for an RTX 2080 ti without bottlenecking?

Or should I say, "screw it," buy a whole new motherboard, and get an i9 9900K?

1) Check your MB BIOS version to see which one the MB had.
How to check the BIOS version https://www.howtogeek.com/196916/how-to-check-your-bios-version-and-update-it/

2) Here is the cpu support list. https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z87 Extreme4/#CPU If the MB has the P2.70 or up version, you don't need to update the BIOS. If the MB does not have, you have to use the i5 to update the BIOS first, then switch to the i7 4790K.
How to update the BIOS: https://www.asrock.com/support/BIOSIG.asp?cat=BIOS8

3) The i7 4790K will bottleneck the rtx2080ti, also if the PSU is old (and I don't know what it is), even it can power the gtx 980oc for right, and you are better to buy the new PSU for the rtx2080ti too.

One more, your MB may need to update the BIOS for the new rtx2080ti too, because the MB needs the BIOS to support the newer hardware.

Thank you for the reply. And thank you for giving me a way to check. You said that the i7-4790K will bottleneck? But I’ve seen some rigs use the i5 and they’ve been using the RTX. If it bottlenecks, should I then just upgrade my MOBO? Because I’m set on getting the 2080 to.

Here are more details about my specs, since I’m home now:

i5-4670K
ASRock Z87 Extreme4
2x4GB DDR3 1600 RAM
EVGA Nvidia 980 OC
Corsair CX750M PSU
1080p 120Hz TV (though for some reason I get 60mz when on PC)

So, I’ve heard that i7-4790K will bottleneck an RTX 2080ti. Depending on what performance I want. I do want to upgrade to 4K, so my next step is knowing if the i7 will bottleneck a 2080ti so severely on either my current display or if I upgrade to a 4K. Any help is appreciated.

Here is the info for the "Ultimate Bottlenecking Guide Rev. 2.0", and keep in mind the rtx2080 is better than the gtx1080ti.

Also it depends on what kind the games you play, gpu intensive or gpu intensive games. also like you said the monitor too. If you want to upgrade the PC, you will need the new MB/CPU/RAM too, because the newer gen cpu/MB will use the DDR4 RAM.

One more, if you don't mind the bottlenecking or not, just use whatever you like to buy.

I appreciate it, thank you very much. I'm happy I looked it up beforehand, because I thought I could just straight up upgrade my CPU without also upgrading the MB. Though, since the i9-9900K requires a new MB and DDR4 RAM, I think I'll stick with the i7-4790K upgrade for now, and upgrade my current RAM to 16GB at the least. As for the bottlenecking, the 4790K seems to not bottleneck much with a 1080ti. Though of course, the same might not be true with the 2080 ti. I'll have to do more research as to whether others have experienced much difficulty with the same CPU or not. Also, is my PSU enough?
