Assistance required in choosing a Motherboard for Core i5 2400 2nd Gen, and Powercolor HD 7850 2GB...

Hello and Good day to everyone.

As title of the thread suggests, I am offered a Core i5 2400 Processor as a gift from my dad and I already have a Powercolor HD 7850 2GB Graphic card. I am currently using Dell Inspiron 530 with the graphics card afore mentioned. I'd like to ask the Tom's community to help me out in choosing a motherboard that is good for both the processor and the graphics card. I have a suggestion from my local vendor, he says he has a Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H Board witch is "Pretty Good" according to him. He also has an Asrock motherboard that he is not confirmed about the model of. He says "I think it's Z77"...

I want, better yet I need your help people. Please help a fellow Tom member in buying a good motherboard.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First up, ensure that you get a motherboard with an intel socket 1155 design. Some of the latest cpus use a different socket..the 1150 and the motherboards supporting those cpus can not run with your 2400.

Since you feel, it is gaming alone that you want to focus on, you should get a motherboard with 16 GB or more of ram support for any ram related upgrade you may want later on and 8 GB ram has pretty much become standard practice in the more recent builds (honestly, I feel 8 gb is all you need in a gaming build.)

An i5 2400 can run two 7850s in crossfire easily. If, there is a chance that you may get another 7850, then you need a board which has two PCIE 2.0/3.0 x16 slots that supports the crossfire technology.

Well my friend, as it turns out, the man on the counter was wrong. The Mobo he has is not Z77. So what else you have in mind??? I am all ears for your contributions. So if you have something, please do share....
You know these were just the options he gave, the market is still there, you can suggest something that you'd like for yourself and I'll be sure to check it out for availability...

Well, Thanks for your advice buddy, I'll search for Z77, but in case I don't find the Z77, what do you suggest I look for next??? And by the way, this i5 2400 I am about to accept, Is it any good for gaming??? My only passion near a PC is gaming and gaming only. So, how good is my rig going to be when i5 2400 an HD 7850 are combined???

well i have my self an i5 3470 in my build its cheaper and has yet to give me bottle necking and 7850 is a good card but it if i were you id go for the gtx 760 its just come down in price and has 2 gb of video ram failing that the r270x if u want to stick with amd

OOOOooooo, I never thought about i5, but I always underestimated my Graphics card..... It's good to know that I'll have a little Beasty of my own when it gets ready...... Many thanks for your time my good man...... 😉 😉

Now, some of the board chipsets that you can look for are H, B and Z series boards with 6X or 7X number. Examples are,

H61 (wont recommend it),

H67 (I have one, but it has only one PCIE slot),

Z67 (better boards with lots of features like SLI and CFX support and OC options for "unlocked" cpus),

B75 (for the budget gamer, some what similar to H67), and

Z77 (Similar to Z67 but more technically updated).

Now that you have an idea of what to look for, get back to us with all the options that are available to you and then we can all help you pick one. Check if any of the Asus P8 Z77 boards are available with your local vendors.

Great then, I'll be sure to look the MoBo up to see if its available, and my dear fellow I stated that I already have HD7850, I bought it with the scholarship money I received about 5 months back :wahoo: . So I am not going to update my GPU in near future, not for at least a year or so. By the way thanks for your time and advice. :)

Hey everyone, once again I am here requiring your help on the matter. As many of you suggested to get B75 board if Z77 is not available and I did so. Now I want want to ask about the Intel's turbo Boost technology. My Processor has the ability to go up to 3.5 GHz in Turbo mode and I was wondering that will this board provide me such a sweet treat?????? Or I should change the selection while I can????? No Over-Clocking, just the Turbo Boost Technology...... Please help.....

I'll be waiting for the responses Anxiously.......

Thanks for the clarification Buddy, And My Choice is stuck at Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H for the time being, for two reasons.
1) Budget.
2) Lack of heart to experiment around.

What is your opinion??? I haven't yet bought the MoBo because my payment got delayed..... I can still consider some useful advice..... 😉 😉 😉

i have fx 6300 and gigabyte ga 78lmt s2 and it supports boost 3.5 - 4.2 GHz and unlocked multiplier. So I guess ur mobo also can support turbo boost.

D3H was a decent design when it came out as far as I can recall...I have not been around in the forums or keeping up with the new stuff lately. A tech power up review found it to be a good mobo and that's all I can remember. I think you have a good choice there. The ASrock that Sam mentioned might be a better choice in terms of more ports etc (I am not cross checking anything...but you obviously should) and if it is available, between these two boards, go with whichever is cheaper.
