I can't find any comparison on Tom's of the two cards I'm considering buying. Asus 9600xt comes with HL2 and I like the TV in feature, but 9800SE has the 8 pipelines which I fear may be necessary down the road as games get more complex.

Anyone have an opinion or know where I can find a comparison? This would be based on out of the box performance since I know didly about overclocking.

Unfortunately, the SE edition of the 9800 has 4 pipelines, and not 8. 4 are rendered inactive. So the 9600XT would be significantly faster, at stock and for overclocking.

The 9800SE has 4 pipelines because it's a defective 9800 chip. The 9600 series chip was designed with 4 pipelines on a smaller die process. Nearly every performance factor is the same, except the 9600 Pro and XT are clocked much higher. Therefor the 9600 Pro outperforms the 9800SE, and the 9600XT outperforms the 9600 Pro. They also produce less heat and consume less power.

Here's a great article that explains 9800/9800SE features.

Yes, you can see from the pics that Powercolor sent them a rare 256-bit 9800SE, while Saphire sent them the standard 128-bit version. The PowerColor card is also likely a "ringer", sent to them with faster memory than the retail units are likely to have.

You say that but surely if it is possible to use half of the pipelines as a cut down version of the same card, it would make sense not to waste precious yeild from the fabs, it just seems to me like common sense.

If the thing was the same price as the full product, or sell it in a state that doesn't work at all, then that is a bad thing.

I have viewed this site on my Am386DX-40! it works!!

IT makes money sense, but they should've called them something else. Like the R9400 (it's still availible).

Radeon 9600XT is better than 9800SE.

9800 (non-PRO)/PRO/XT has 8 pipelines, but SE has 4
